I had first listened to this ages ago, not too long after it came out in 2006. I finally found it again, and it was every bit as wonderful the second time. I really don’t see getting tired of it if I listen again and again. I wouldn’t get tired of his voice either. I can’t remember if I have already listened to the sequels (they might not have been published at the time), but I will be starting on the second book once I finish this review. And away we go…

Good story. Unexpected twists. Funny real life anecdotes. This was my second time listening. Glad I found it again.

This story is great! Lots of humor that is enjoyable! Characters are great! This story is clean and perfect for kids and everyone that can listen!

I don't know why adults are sheepish about enjoying "young adult" literature. I didn't want my kids reading bad writing at any age; I didn't buy lousy baby books all the way through … well, whenever I stopped buying them books. After all, how many big fantasies are written for adults? Just the ones with rivets. * … * Science fiction

I may not be the target audience, having been a teenager well before these books were a thought, but I am an avid listener of books on tape. This book, as well as the two others in the series, is at the top of my list for books in this genre. I highly recommend a listen no matter what your age!

I first listened to this book when I was I think 8, and Ive loved it ever since. I’ve listened to it at least 20 times since then. Amazing book.

I loved this ‘ podiobook’ it was a great escape. If you’re looking for something you have never heard before, this won’t be it unless you have never read a fantasy book in your life. That said, this was a well done fun adventure story well worth your time. It is falls under the young adult category, but any fan of fantasy, magic and adventure should enjoy this thoroughly. I hope the author decides to write more. The world he has created while not new still stirs the imagination and while the listener will find many of the tropes of fantasy fiction the author somehow manages to make them still feel new. Their is an innocence to the writing that I found refreshing. The author is not trying to build a better mousetrap, he is just has made one of his own. Again this is a fun comfortable book that should stir the imagination of the young and the old there is no guile to be found. This is just a simple fun fun fantasy and I truly hope the author decides to write more about this wonderful world he has created for there is much more here and I would love to visit this land again.

Not what I had expected at first, but this is a good Young Adult works long as you treat it and judge it as such.

One of the best books I have ever listened to.

I really enjoyed this story and the mythology behind it. The characters were likeable and the plot moved quickly. I can’t wait to jump into Hazel and Oak and see where book 2 leads.

Absolutely love this book!! It is so awesome I’ve been listening to it for probably as long as it’s been out, my whole family does. Every time I listen to it it’s just as great. The Second book is just as great, have yet to hit the third. This series is basically a lifetime favorite and highly recommended, from someone who doesn’t read or listen to books more than once.

I found this wonderful story by accident. . 10-2017 Once you listen your hooked. I wish the chapters were longer. Thank you for sharing these fantastic fantasy adventure. Great for all ages. Great News There’s more I found book two. It’s fabulous, I love John’s L’s humor, story telling & music. The second book is “Hazelandoak” & the last in this fabulous Podcast Trilogy is “The Sons of Machah”. All of the book covers artwork is beautiful! I am in love with this podiocast. I wish the books didn't end. These books took me to another world that had my soul wishing it really exists. The humor is tasteful and gives a very hearty laugh to the listener. Of all the books I've listened to and deleted, I will forever stay subscribed to the books that take me to another land where I feel I am home.

This is only the second audio book that I have listened to, and it is great. I immediately listened to the second book in the trilogy and then bought the trilogy in paperback. I highly recommend this book.

Hooked the whole family

This was a great audiobook I generally cannot get into a story unless I have started to read it first; however, the author does such an amazing job at reading the story that my attention was held the entire time and I ended up finishing the audiobook before my actual book arrived in the mail. This is a great story to get a young reader involved in the world of books and hooked on reading.

I really enjoyed this book. Found it kind of back accident and gobbled both books immediately. Highly recommend!

I enjoyed everything about this book, the series really. Well, the first two anyway, but if the third is only half as good it would still deserve the same praise. A wonderful narrator is just icing in the cake!

Cute fun story. refreshing family podcast.

...which is a big deal. When finding an audio story, I look for 3 things right away - a good and engaging story, the reader's voice and tone, and their ability to create the story using their voice. If they don't have these things, I don't typically listen for long. John Lenahan delivers all these and then some. I will listen to all of his stories again and again for years to come.

Oh boy oh boy …. I can't wait to hear more from John Lenahan! What a wonderful tale!

This is a wonderful story read by the author. He has a great voice and the story is well read. There is a second book after this one be sure to download it too!

Great fun and hilarious!

I couldn't put this book down. This has been one of my favorite podiobooks to listen to, I'm downloading the sequel right now. John Lenahan... I love your voice.

I found this book by accident one day surfing iTunes at a stop light. It is fun, exciting, cheerful, sad, and riviting at times. It made my usually dreadful Dallas commute fun for about two weeks. I'd recommend it for anyone into fantasy and it's a great reader for kids about 10 and up in paperback form.

I have been listening to this series for… Oh, ever since the beginning of Shadowmagic back when I was in High School. I kept listening to this series in five different countries, anxiously trying to download it in internet cafe's and hotel lobbies. I am hopelessly addicted, but have never given it a review. I must say that through out the many many years I've been partaking in this amazing world I was constantly delighted and swept away to a place where magic is real and adventure exists around every corner. I am so enthralled with this series and am anxiously awaiting the third book in the series. These are books I've recommended to all my friends and family, that I have read, re-read, and re-re-re-re-read, because they are THAT good. Keep up the amazing work John, you're doing a good thing for the world and all the readers in it.

A beautiful writer and performer, Lenahan creates a true fairy tale: fun, fantastic, and touching. I enjoyed this story so much that I am now sharing it with my four year old son. He loves it, which is no surprise to this uber fan.
