Biased towards figure painters. John does great interviews, but he generally doesn’t look beyond figure painters.

Gently Does It is the greatest source for interviews of contemporary painters. John’s conversational approach and listener-generated questions make for spectacularly down to earth conversations on the technique, concept, and business of painting in the 21st century. Whether by design or intention, Gently Does It will serve as a historical record of this moment in art history.

So many art podcasts I try to listen to because an artist I follow and aspire to live up to just don’t hit the mark. They talk in circles about nothing; I don’t even know where the conversation begins and one what premise or if questions have even been asked. Plus, the artists in all their conceptual being and practice start talking in hard to follow nuance. It’s just not intriguing as a young artist. John Dalton does not do the above. He hits the mark and even hits other nuances. I feel like I actually learn an artist’s journey in about as much depth as possible without actually knowing them. This podcast is for getting some of the blueprint and tips and tricks and really how an artist undergoes their practice. We get to hear how they got into art, how they went through school, and how they emerged since. Really, I write this because I am listening to another art podcast and I do not know what the artist is even talking about, but I am not intrigued. Some of John’s episode with my favorites, I would listen to again and listen to artist I don’t even know or admire. Thank you for being one of the bunch that gets to the point. :)

Every one of these is unique. Can’t wait to get into the earlier stuff I’ve missed, having just discovered John’s wonderful podcast a few weeks ago.

Pilat - her painting is terrific. She’s entitled to her own opinions and inspirations - however the fact that she finds the misanthrope Ayn Rand a “hero” kinda ends it there for me.

John “effortlessly” lays every thought and like the great Master, all feels (improbably) right . The guess, each one more selfless than the next. And the new Uncut gems , confirmed 400 years later how much better is to be first in crudeness than second in fines.

As a creativity coach I help clients get comfortable playing in the space of possibility before their desired outcome is reached. This episode gave me some excellent ideas and language to use when explaining structure to them. I have only listened to one episode and am already hooked! I love the format and the information conveyed. What excellent insight to the art, artist, process, and business.

Truly one of the best art/painting podcasts out there. (Trust me I have looked.) This wonderful show hosts a slew of prolific artists as they give thoughtful advice and creative insight on their careers as painters. Most of the artists are figurative oil painters. But there are quite a few other mediums represented as well. You will not regret subscribing. Many other art podcasts I find either the host is too feather-brained or the information is too basic. Not John Dalton’s podcast! He really knows how to put on a wonderful show!

To me, as an artist, John’s podcast is a quintessential resource for information and community. His guests are those at the top of the representational art world. And the conversation is intelligent and leisurely. I highly recommend this podcast.

John not only gets the top talent in the art world on his show, he does a wonderful job with his interviews. I listen while working in my own studio and truly enjoy everytime someone new is on. There is always something new to learn from his guests. I highly recommend his program. Keep up the great work John.

I've been recommending this podcast to lots of budding artists back in the UK. When my sister went to art school in Bristol not too long ago, she was advised that painting was dead, or at least in a terminal state. John Dalton's podcasts celebrate the fact that the craft of painting is, in fact, flourishing around the world.

I had the privilege of viewing Alex's works in a NYC art gallery. I loved all that were on view! I also met Alex and his lovely wife and daughter. Your questions were knowledgeable and insightful. Alex's answers were thoughtful and inspiring. 5Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Love the interviews with contemporary artists who are successful at their craft. Mix of aesthetics, philiosphy, religion, biography, and pratical advice. Brilliant!

As an Artist myself, there is a lot of solitude when painting. So I listen to books and podcasts to add a little spark to my day; I love listening to John Dalton's podcasts of Artist interviews. It is an opportunity to "visit" with other Artists out there and find out what they're thinking!

I am thrilled with this podcast for the interesting content about mostly artists and what makes them tick, but really its more than that too. John is an excellent interviewer, with his eclectic life interests and talents he brings so much depth to the ways in which the stories unfold. This podcast is a huge contribution to my life as I develop my artistic life more fully. Icing on the cake, the Irish accent is a treat to my USA ears.

Finally an enlightened recording that does not start off with spa music... John's perspective on life makes me think and smile, which makes it both interesting and entertaining. If you don't know any of his work, this podcast is a great way to dive in his reality.
