Deep Democracy

98

Forget about getting mad or getting even, this is a political show about how we are moving forward. Movement building pros Gina Christo and Wilnelia Rivera helped get Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-7) elected and know how deep democracy works when it centers the people we usually see at the margins. Each month they look at dumpster fires happening on the political ground and highlight the women, queer folk, and POC fighting the good fight and winning key battles across the country.

    Checking privilege
I wish there was another WOC who could also host with Wilnelia. As a Boston WOC listener, I was like “what?” when I heard the other co-host say that her demographic is “nerdy women.” Really? As a person with an intersectional identity, I am born with my identities - racial, class - and I don’t have the privilege to pick a political demographic based on hobbies / choices I make.

    A.V. Club - May 2019
"Sorting through the current political trash heap can feel tiring and demoralizing, but movement-building pros and hosts of Deep Democracy Gina Christo and Wilnelia River infuse politics with Beyoncé and T.J.Maxx candles, creating an engaging conversation that calls you to joy and justice. Highlighting the marginalized folks doing work to galvanize communities, Deep Democracy facilitates a new conversation around representative democracy. This super dense episode demystifies the vital nature of the recent mayoral elections to the run-up to 2020, unpacks big issues heading to the Supreme Court, and explains the implications of adding a citizenship question to the census. Journalist and organizer Clarissa Brooks (Teen Vogue, Nylon, The Guardian) joins the conversation this month, addressing the challenges of organizing at Spelman College, the need to have flexibility and evolution in politics, and the polarizing nature of her 2015 BLM protest against Hillary Clinton. Stressing the importance of visibility in organizing, Clarissa exposes the challenges that movements face as they become monetized. From hot takes on Shaun King’s open apology to a biting analysis of Mayor Pete, this episode proves that Deep Democracy might just be peerless in the political podcast space. [Morgan McNaught]"

Finally a politics show that's not all about bros
I'm a politics junkie and love the fresh perspective these hosts bring, as gay women, and Wilnelia as a WOC, and as progressive movement builders with state, local and national experience. The point they made in the second episode about forgetting winning back the white working class and instead focusing on winning back the South, where millions of brown and black folks have been disenfranchised and generally discouraged from voting, is so dang smart and something I haven't even heard mentioned on other podcasts. I'm excited for more episodes!

    We all need deep democracy
As a woman of color currently running for House Delegate in Virginia, this podcast could not be more spot-on. Thank you for continuing to push the message that democracy needs us and that when you include the people in the margins, you include everyone. It’s on all of my campaign materials! 💙

    Best Podcast Ever?
I love this podcast and i wrote a really long elaborate review explaining why but it didn’t post so I’ll just leave this here- Gina and Wilnelia are wonderful, educated, fair, and fascinating! Please keep making these!

    Not what I expected.
This is an OpEd talk show basically—. Opinion shows are fine, but the trailer built it up to be a serious conversation with some acknowledged experts. Listening to it feels like an intercepted private phone call between two friends—with a rather gossiping tone to it. I suppose ‘not professional’ is what I’m trying to say. I wish them luck; they have a long way to go.

    Deep?
When I opened the podcast, I thought it would be discussion diving deep into a topic, but both the women seem to bounce from subject to subject without providing any context of what they’re talking about. For instance they mention an announcement, but don’t read the announcement for those of us that might not have seen it— making it more vague opinions with no context. Providing feedback as a woman myself and want to see this type of conversation succeed!

    A Political Podcast Done Right
I typically shy away from political shows because I don’t find the topics and viewpoints interesting. This was the opposite. Thanks for sharing your perspectives on the political process and current events. I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed the conversations.
