Wits ® – APM Podcasts

284

Wits was a weekly national public radio broadcast produced and distributed by American Public Media. As of September 2015, the broadcast ended. The stage shows that provided material for the broadcast are on hiatus, as is the podcast version of Wits. It is our intention to take a little time away from Wits and then look for ways to bring it back on stage and in podcast in a different form. On Wits, some of the top names in comedy and music have joined host John Moe for sketch comedy, improv, conversation, songs and genuine beauty in a program praised as "one of the rare public radio comedy shows that's actually funny" (Huffington Post) and "one of the most unique, entertaining and diverse shows on radio" (The Growler). You can listen to all of our archives online and follow host John Moe on Twitter (@johnmoe) for more information on Wits and other projects.

    Love it still
This remains one of my all time favorite podcasts and I hope it returns someday. Seriously, it holds up. LISTEN.

    The Wordplay Is Magical.
I listen to it over and over. The only thing I can fault you for is not having a podcast every week. I would really like to listen every week. I miss John Moe and his cast of characters, guests, and musicians. WITS is a true gem of a show.

The variety show I needed all along
My folks used to stay up late watching similar programs on tv. Such an eclectic, charming collection of witty humor, great music & compelling banter. Wish I could hire the team back. Only SuperEgo has made me laugh as much. Legit gem I’ve downloaded on many devices to replay often. Still gets a sly grin every repeat. Thanks for sharing this opus

    Literally the best
Wits is the funniest and most entertaining radio show I have ever heard. It has comedy, improv, music, and interesting guests that never fail to make me laugh. I actually can't stop myself from laughing out loud at times. Wits makes my day better, and I hope they begin to make new episodes soon.

    Love this program
This podcast has my kind of humor. I love the guests that come on, and I got to see it live with George Takei!

    Great Stuff
Love this show, especially the ones with Neil Gaiman. Oh and Maria Bamford, oh and a bunch more. The combination of music interspersed with wacky fun is entertaining enough so that I often laugh out loud as I'm going about my day as a school custodian.

    ... I want more!

    Wonderful!
I can't believe it took me so long to find this completely wonderful, comedy variety show podcast. Featuring guests from Neil Gaimond to W. Kamau Bell to Maria Bamford to George Takei, it's surprising it hasn't already reached more mainstream success! But then Minnesotans have always been a modest people. Still, I've never laughed so hard unabashadly in public than listening to Keegan-Michael Key recreate the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as Shakespeare.

    Terrible, terribe, terrible
Astonishingly witless show. I really have tried this more than once but it is probably the unfunniest show I have ever heard on NPR and I am a public radio addict. I have no clue how this show continues to air and it gives ammunition to anti-NPRers. Super groany, super annoying, super trying-too-hard ALL THE TIME. The only good thing about the show is the musical guest (occasionally) and the pure relief you get when the show is over, like a sliver being pulled out.

    Not funny
I downloaded this because of all the great guests….but it turns out to just be a big lame party full of unfunny skits, way too many bad musical jokey numbers, and way way way too much talking about nothing on stage. so boring. i can’t even listen to it on long commutes or road trips, it’s so bad!!! cringe worthy!!!

I can't get enough of wits!

    Weird and fun.
Another show I gave a shot based on Paul F. Tompkins being a regular guest, and it has become one of my mandatory "day-of-release" listens. I've even bought new music for the first time in a long time due to the eclectic guests on the show.

    Not entertaining
This show is not funny. I enjoy live comedy and improv in general but this show has never made me laugh. A disappointing public radio product.

    Fabulous.
I love this show so much I am paying to see it live in April. If you ever need a show to listen to Wits is your show. I've listened to every single episode more than once. My favorites are Maria Bamford and Brandi Carlile's and Kumail Nanjiani and Valerie June's. It would be so cool to have a musical comedian (particularly Tim Minchin or Bo Burnham) on this show it would be so entirely hilarious. Especially Bo. He's Wits material. (Look in to it, John Moe.) THE BEST. Definitely my favorite podcast.

    Whole family loves it!
Great host, great band, great guests. Listen now or murder cat will have to pay you a visit.

I look forward to every episode
I’ve been following Wits since the beginning and I love it. John Moe has created a truly funny show and assembled a great cast of writers/performers and musicians to back up the guests. Don’t miss out on this.

Come for the guests, stay for the rest
Intelligent, offbeat, passionate, inclusive, musical, unafraid. Wits is a live stage show generally put on at the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul, Minnesota. The host, John Moe, wrote for McSweeny's and took that expereince as well as working in public radio and spun it out into this show that is gernally 45 to 50 minutes per episode. The format of the show is a musical guest and a comedy guest. Both are interviewed a bit, involved in the various sketches, and play a bit of music (two to three songs on the podcast). Thing is, the interviews, while containing perfectly normal questions, just as often ask quirky and off beat questions too. It's part "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me", part "Prairie Home Companion", part concert, part conversations with friends. An intergal part of the show is the house band The Witnesses, led by Trip Shakespeare and Semisonic alum John Munson on bass. Able to hold their own whenever called upon, they bring a zip to the show. And that is a vibraphone you hear. I mentioned "inclusive" above. The show promotes the active use of twitter during the show. It's a remarkable synergy in the theater. The show can be found on twitter at @wits . I've been to a number of the live shows. If you can make it, you should go to those. They are longer and somehow more intimate than the podcast, plus longer so more to enjoy.

Funny, Fanciful, Smart, and Slightly Skewed
John Moe hosts forays into a parallel universe, where innocent visits with small town folk turn into the NPR equivalent of "The Far Side." This Show is Addicting.

    Variety show
This is the podcast equivilant of a 70's variety show.

    A True Delight
I will preface with the obligatory "I never write reviews" routine; but alas, it is true, I never do. I did feel an obligation to share my overwhelming obsession to this show. This show has the best guests in comedy, music and any entertainment I have ever experienced. I could blather on but just check out the show.
  • Joe Adams Music
    Good.
It is a funny show. A lot of the John Moe bits are super lame in podcast form - way funnier if you are at the live show. Also: I do not understand all the re-released material. I wish that it was just in order of when they broadcast the show without the re-releases. Makes it super confusing to follow in sequential order. It is free though, so I am a dork to complain.
  • ogroy
Addictive in al the ways you want from a podcast.
In my experience podcast listening is a binge affair. You discover one you like and spend weeks devouring the back catalogue to the exclusion of all else. Wits is the perfect candidate for this kind of listening. It has energy, variety, and intelligence and is guaranteed to isolate you in a world of references only you get and jokes no one else will laugh at when you tell them because as much as you believe to the contrary, you’re not as funny as these people. But that’s why you should listen, because these people are so much funnier than you or the people you know.

    Nothing But Smiles
If I'm in a funk, or feeling blue, or if I'm happy as Pharrell and feeling good, it doesn't matter, wits always brings makes me feel pure happiness. It's inspiring, hilarious, sweet, wonderful and just pure original beauty. It's my go to for hard smiles and feeling good, just one of the best.
  • Lemming96
    Funny but disorganized
I like this podcast, but the way it's being released is so out of order and confusing. I get that there can be a delay, but this weeks podcast is "part one" of another podcast that "part two" was released 5 months prior and sections of this weeks were featured in several other podcast episodes. It's funny, but I don't want to hear repeated skits unless I replay the episode. I wish they were released semi chronologically.

    Amazing variety show
This show is what prairie home companion could be if it were funny, had good music, and weren't terrible. Wits has a wonderful dry comedic style that I can't get enough of.

    55-60% Awesome
I love everything about this show except the choice of bands. I'm not a fan of their musical taste, but the comedians, skits, and quiz show portions are fantastic.

    My morning and evening commute!
The Wits podcast is a great way to start the day. John Moe and Company put together a great package of banter, stories, comedy and music that entertain me to and from work. I haven't seen a Wits show yet, but its on my bucket list. In the mean time, I'll enjoy Moe, Munson and their rotating band of merrypeople via iTunes.

Prairie Home Companion for a new generation...
...is how I've described this show to everyone who will listen since I discovered it a couple months ago. People have worried about how to usher public radio into the 21st century, and I think Wits is leading the way. Fantastic show.
  • DrClayForrester
    A Fantastic Show
Not only is Wits a great show, but John Moe and the rest of the cast are hilarious and The Witnesses are one of the best house bands out there. Along with this, the show has introduced me to some fantastic music I'd have otherwise not heard. The comedy guests are fantastic, too!

    What You've Been Looking For
Wits is a clever and entertaining radio show. While it's perfect for all ages it doesn't dumb down for a broad audience. It's a breath of fresh air that makes work, driving, and relaxing at home easy to do. Keep it up Wits!

My reason to listen to podcasts
I've dabbled in podcasts before, but haven't found anything compelling until I heard Wits. It is my only podcast, and I listen to it every week. It's great. I laugh out loud; the musical performances are awesome. I hope Wits is here to stay and I can't wait to see it live (I'm from MN, so they record just a few miles away from me).

    The Best!
My favorite comedians and my favorite musicians get together with a amazing host and band and do skits, play songs, and compete for artistic glory in the Wits Game Show, while generally just having a great time. I love this show!

    Even Better
I was nervously anticipating the return of Wits this fall after enjoying last years programs. I worried that this year would fall short of my expectations. I was wrong. The writing is as sharp as ever. The guests are great (Loudon Wainwright III, really? Wow!!). This year is off to a great start. Great way to start my weekend!

I'm not usually one to give perfect five star reviews. But this show/podcast definitely deserves it. Keep it coming!

    Best Thing Ever
Ok, so it’s really rare that something comes along that is so creatively relevant. At least as far as I’m concerned. It’s like they call be before each season and ask me who I want to be on as a guest. Occasionally, there’s someone I’m not that familiar with, but in each of those cases I have to ask myself what sort of cosmic screw up has caused me to miss out on their work? John Moe is always insightful and hilarious, and the house band “The Witnesses” are nothing short of PERFECT. The blend of John Munson’s musical chops as band leader and bassist along with Joe Savage’s pedal steel capability with Steve Roehm’s vibes and the absolutely silky voice of Janey Winterbauer, rival The Roots as House Band of the decade. To the extent you think my description is hyperbolic, well….. listen to the show. If you want to argue with me then, go ahead. But you’ll be wrong.
