Whirlwind: America, Russia & Ukraine

494

Written and narrated by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tim Weiner, Whirlwind: America, Russia & Ukraine examines the ongoing war in Ukraine, the worst war in Europe since WWII, in interviews with decorated, high-ranking CIA veterans who have led the American intelligence war with Russia for decades. These experts explain how Putin laid the groundwork for attacking Ukraine using deception and disinformation, how Russian disinformation has been amplified by American media figures and politicians, and how American political warfare can undermine Putin and the Kremlin.Whirlwind is an Audacy original presented in partnership with Tim Weiner and Jigsaw Productions.

    Deep Bias, but some good
There is an obvious dig at Trump and the Republican Party, which develops into its own interpretation of history far before any of it is proven factual in the current day. I did not like the parts that were pontificating, but I did enjoy some of the parts about the Soviet Union and how it operated. I also do believe Russian AND Chinese foreign influence is real. The parts on communism influence in the early 20th century in the U.S. was also interesting, but I highly doubt it was much of a sticking point, or threat back then as deeply as it was described. I think this was just a balancing act between the Trump digs and bringing up communism in the U.S. to soften those digs. People were more patriotic back then in the U.S. from my understanding, not even close to communists. But, I appreciate the communist threat in a way in the theory as some liberals in the U.S. are shifting towards socialism and communism, because they aren’t too bright. Maybe that will push them more moderate. It’s just a mixed bag with obvious political intent.

Thank you! This is eye-opening. Very well done. I’m sad to say I fell subject to this cyber attack years ago. I see it now.

    Biased
Clearly biased. I wish podcasts would just stick to the facts but it’s clear there’s an agenda here. Couldn’t get past the first episode.

This isn’t the whole truth. You need to go back in history to understand everything.

    Left wing American hate
Yet one more attempt to make free American people feel bad for fighting to stay free. Both political parties want to keep people separated and fighting so we can’t see them stealing OUR country. Shame one you for promoting their agenda.

    Excellent
This is one of the most insightful podcasts I have ever listen to, and extremely important to hear in this current political climate. This truth, needs to be heard and disseminated. In addition to the failures of the US intelligence to prevent the Russian interference, the histories of this period in American history, if written honestly, will describe how we lost the cultural Cold War to an utterly inept Soviet skeleton because our religious fundamentalists were so susceptible to absurd, nonsensical worldviews. My favorite quote from the podcast is, “There are no secrets that time does not reveal.”

Truly Important Podcast - Must Listen
Seminal work about historical relations between Russia/Soviet Union and the US. This podcast - and the research source material - is critical to understand both the historical context and existing efforts by Russia to control the US. Ignore the low reviews - these are from Pro-Trump supporters who don’t want to believe the factual conclusions of the podcast. As Trump considers another run in 2024, I encourage everyone to listen to this podcast by Intelligence Expert Tim Weiner

Democrat propaganda with a dash of history
This might have well been ghost written by the DNC as an anti-Trump hit piece with just enough historical information to make it seem like a factual historical podcast.

    John Brennan?
Good until John Brennan appears. He is not a reliable source of information because of his bias & the fact that he admittedly voted for communist candidates in past. How was he ever approved as CIA director? Great job covering Russia’s hacking expertise around the world. Could have done without the last 2 episodes, however. Not much history included in those episodes.

Great podcast on the history of Russia and US “relations”
I was completely fascinated with this podcast. Could not stop listening. So must history I never knew about. Some parts seemed a little rushed... maybe it’s because it was all new to me or maybe because he had 80+ years worth of history to cram into a limited number of episodes with limited time frames, but I’m interested in knowing if the book goes into more detail...?

A podcast explaining propaganda while being propaganda.
Almost gave it two starts as some of the middle episodes appeared to deliver what it promised; in depth analysis and history of Cold War propaganda. But kinda goes off the rails in episode 9 imho. They literally do exactly what they claim to fear. They reference Trump telling people to drink bleach and play a clip that doesn’t say that, but claim it does (since this clip doesn’t exist). They do the same with, “kids in cages” even though this has been going on significantly before Trump. All in all, I consider myself pretty central, maybe lean right but this is literally left wing propaganda masquerading as independent journalism of some form; I had high hopes.

Starts out great then loses some luster
Starts out great and the first seven episodes are quite informative. Episodes 8-10 go off the rails and it becomes a rant against Trump and less informative as the earlier episodes.
  • Clifford82
    Strong Start, Weak Finish
The first several episodes were an interesting, informative look into the history of American spy craft. The last two+ episodes were disasters. The show morphed from history to left wing partisanship. Trump is apparently a Russian agent. Russian Facebook posts during the 2016 election are a “digital 9/11” which the host then says is true, but without the deaths. What??? The final kicker is the suggestion that social media posts by the Rooskies could be justification for the US declaring war on Russia. I can only imagine the uproar the host and his guests would have if Trump declared war on Russia because of Facebook posts. The degree of blatant partisanship in the last few episode ruins what otherwise was a good series.

Your daughter’s idea on democracy in this country
I agree, your daughter expressed an opinion that displayed a horrifying level of ignorance. She cloaked it in what she undoubtedly thinks of as an intelligent argument. Her own argument presented how woefully uneducated her thoughts are, how insipid her complaints are, how whining and intellectually bereft she is. I realize she is not the only “young” person to think this way, which I find alarming as it is equally a statement of being profoundly lacking in her letters—a word once used to describe a person of education and being well-read. I would be quite sad if my daughter was so poor in thought as she apparently is. Democracy does not come in a box. It takes work. It takes many people striving for its full expression. She apparently has no knowledge of who those who have strived are—I doubt she could name not even one. Her snottiness was offensive.

    Well this explains a lot
I’ve been wondering why Americans are acting so crazy lately. Why do they believe so many crazy conspiracy theories and lies. And then I listened to Whirlwind. It explains so much. You know how some podcasts ramble on just to fill time? That is not the case here. Whirlwind doesn't waste words as Tim Weiner lays out the facts, building on past political events leading to where we find ourselves today. The guests are all heavy hitters with impressive credentials. And they don't waste time either.

    Eye opener
This podcast was a true eye opener for me. As I was just a child when this whole thing started with Russia, I really never knew the back stories to theses events. I feel so awoke now and I can totally see how we got where we are now. Like pieces of a puzzle. Great podcast!

    Good [Selective] Storytelling
The episode ‘Perfect Weapons’ omits one convenient detail pertaining to cyber warfare: Stuxnet. America is ultimately responsible for unleashing cyber war. Operation Olympic Games was an unambiguous escalation in the history of geopolitical combat.

    Proof is in the reviews
This podcast takes a long, deep look at American relations with Russia and how, since the end of World War 2 they have had an adversarial relationship. It is well researched, masterfully narrated and the interviews are top notch. Need proof? Go look at the one star reviews. As the host is educating us about the depth and breadth of Russian propaganda, disinformation and espionage we are seeing the fruits of those labors here. These one star reviews are either from the brain washed alt right followers of Trump or their straight out of Russian cyber command in Vladivostok. Don’t let the Russians win. Remember the old saying; better dead than red, be it communist or republican.

    Exciting & Informative
I have listened to the first four episodes and love it so far! A great podcast for those interested in learning about espionage and covert operations during The Cold War. Fans of the game "Twilight Struggle" can also gain a lot of historical context.

    Terrible
Very much a case of: figure out what you want the answer to be and then only present evidence, including fabricated information, to fit your narrative. This isn’t investigative journalism; this is narrative speculation and creation.

A brutally honest shot of reality
As someone who has experience in the intelligence field, I can say this is a great listen to understand the reality of Russia’s influence on the United States. Many will be put down due to Trump’s part in this series and be unable to look past their political views, but if you can view things in life objectively, this is a great listen.

    Essential listening!
This series is essential (especially for millennials) in understanding the history of relationship between Russia and the United States and connecting the dots in how it’s playing out right now. It’s also candy for the ear! It will have you binging like a spy novel except you can also cook dinner at the same time. And unlike fiction, this podcast presents the very real stakes of the US-Russia Whirlwind.

    Fascinating and Compelling-Must Listen!
This is a riveting account of the history of political warfare, compellingly reported and narrated, full of cool archival material, and just super interesting. It’s a “must” listen in these times!

    Better than a novel
As a young foreign correspondent in the 1980s, I kicked around in some of the places at the sharp end in Tim Weiner's Whirlwind podcast series -- southern Africa, South America, East Asia. He has nailed it. This is not only better told than most Cold War novels--the storytelling is breathtaking--but the anecdotes ring 100 percent true. Tim connects the dots in ways that make you think, Aha, now I get it. I've been spellbound through the first two hours. The hardback copy of his book arrives tomorrow. I can't wait.

    Terrific Podcast/Wide Appeal
Tom Weiner’s podcast “Whirlwind,” drawn from his sensational new book “The Folly and the Glory,” is riveting and of high production quality. You hear the actual recordings of key players, thus far the likes of McCarthy, Angleton, Helms, KGB defectors, to name just a few. This is not a show you’ll want just playing in the background. I think that, like me, you’ll be captivated.

Excellent podcast that explains the TRUTH!
30 more days until we finally get to dump Don the Con! He traveled to Wisconsin and New Jersey AFTER he tested positive for Covid!! How careless and selfish is that? He's a wreckless narcissist who is a threat to our health, national security, and Democracy. I can't WAIT to vote blue down the entire ballot and send that fool to the big house! #BidenHarris2020
