Key Battles of World War One

10

World War One is the watershed moment in modern history. The Western World before it was one of aristocrats, empires, colonies, and optimism for a future of unending progress. After four years of hellish trench warfare, shell fire, 10 million combat deaths, and another 10 million civilian deaths, the world that emerged in 1918 was irrevocably changed. Nation-states came out of the rubble, along with a push for universal rights. New technologies emerged, such as tanks and fighter planes. But something was lost permanently in the Great War: a sense of optimism in mankind. In this series, history professors Scott Rank and James Early look at the 10 key battles that determined the outcome of the war between the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire) and the Allies (Britain, France, Russia, United States).

    Much more than just battles
This is a comprehensive overview of the war PLUS the key battles. It’s an easy-to-follow and very enjoyable listen with two likable hosts.

    Excellent!
It’s not just about the battles. They do a great job putting things in their proper geo-political context which is key to understanding 2nd and 3rd order effects of the war. I love listening to these guys.

    Great Pod Bad Ads
Loved the podcast but you guys could possibly have the most annoying advertisements I’ve ever heard. I can’t skip ahead fast enough.

Great Addition to My Book Club
I’ve got a WW1 book club and this is fantastic extra piece of the education. Nice, succinct lessons with just the right amount of humor. Hosts have a nice chemistry.

The singing in the first episode is stuck in my head! It was very detailed and was very entertaining.

    Wow — Hideous Opening
0:45 into Episode 1 and I’m out. What could possibly have suggested to you that *singing* was a good idea? This is the most deadly serious topic imaginable and this is how you start? You certainly set a tone right away and kept me from wasting my time. Amazing.

    ADD historian
I love history and as a veteran I like hearing the stories of wars fought in the past but it’s hard to follow this podcast because they bounce around to much and don’t stay on topic at all they really should call themselves the Add Historians

    Nice Overview of the War
I have been listening to the podcast with my son. We both enjoy military history. I have read a lot of the major works on the war, but my son is getting his first introduction. I think getting this overview from a couple of experts via podcast is a nice way to start a study. The guys do nice job of including references they recommend from youtube, books, movies, and other podcasts. They also include plenty of factoids to make it interesting. Last but not least, their passion for the subject really comes through. Enjoy!

It’s very informative and the hosts are good, but please work on the correct pronunciation for names and places.

    Great WW1 podcast
My only complaint is that my wife is tired of me singing “over there.” James and Scott do a great job of sharing info that is entertaining and informative.

Great presentation of so much history!
Really enjoying this show. I just finished one of the first few episodes. The episode about the WWI soldier caught my attention. I was expecting to hear a bit more about The Great Influenza and it’s impact on the soldiers and the war. (Perhaps you cover that in future episodes.) Anyway, I thought you and some of your listeners might enjoy reading a book by John M. Barry, The Great Influenza. I had never realized how the war efforts and the 1917/1918 outbreak of this influenza, so impacted one another. Reading Barry’s book sent me wanting to lean more about WWI, and in turn I began listening to this podcast. Thank you for a great program!

    Stop Swallowing!!
I literally just started listening to your podcast and the content is excellent BUT sweet be Jesus, stop swallowing so loud! So distracting, it’s like you’re struggling to speak. Very good show.

    Stop!
Stop with the drinking game ideas. It’s fine once or twice but it gets old fast. Love the show!

    Outstanding
Should be required for freshman high school. We cannot understand our present, without knowing our past. The United States we know today is a direct result of WW1. Thank you for your time and efforts. This podcast is a big deal. The understanding of why is most important.

    Really enjoyed it. Thank you.
I loved the music in the intro. Wished more historical audio clips were added to these type of podcasts.

    Generally good
Overall an informative podcast led by the folksy story teller James Early who teaches at the junior college level so expect that level of analysis of history. Unfortunately his co-host Scott can be awkward and his interjections jarring really breaking up the flow of the storytelling with often off subject quotes and factoids. So if you want your history light and not too taxing, this is the show for you.

    Awesome Look Back at History
I have listened to all of their Key Battles podcasts and WWI doesn’t disappoint. There are a lot of details that I never learned in school. Getting to learn all aspects that lead to the war was fantastic.

Great duo /annoying mouth sounds and gulps
Great podcast with two very knowledgeable historians! They both seem to tell the story well, along with supplemental humor. I generally really enjoy listening to guys. But....the gulps, smacks and other weird mouth sounds is a foul. It’s just one of them who does it.

    Awesome! ... but...
Awesome podcast, informative! I can’t get through a whole episode however, when James Early is a guest as he has the most annoying penchant for swallowing, and using his tongue to make phlegmy/nasal sounds that just send this listener over the edge... maybe a noise canceler on your mics could prevent, or minimize this?
