Nurture vs Nurture with Dr. Wendy Mogel

1,294

Nurture vs Nurture is a new podcast brought to you by the producers of Armchair Expert. Dr. Wendy Mogel, social-clinical psychologist and author, specializes in the protection and promotion of self-reliance, resilience, accountability and exuberance in children and she is our fearless leader in this new endeavor. Each week, Dr. Wendy sits down with a different set of parents for a therapy session. She brings her forty years of experience working with families to these intimate and wonderfully voyeuristic conversations. This podcast allows the listener to go on another family's journey and to receive practical advice along the way. Wendy proves that, perhaps counterintuitively, there is nothing more universal than our specificity. In each episode, Wendy also introduces us to a foreign word that is untranslatable into English in order to enhance our minds and vocabularies on parenthood, family and communication with those we love the most.

Such quality advice!!! We want more!!!
I’m the type of person that listens to A LOT of podcasts, including A LOT of self help/advice/parenting shows. Dr. Mogel is so sweet, so knowledgeable, so nice to listen to, and so brilliantly good at what she does! I look forward to every episode that drops, even though it’s not so frequent these days. Would love to hear more!!!

    Not Alone!
Sometimes as a parent you feel like you’re in a silo and not enough people talk about the day to day messiness of raising kids. Listening to the guidance from Dr. Wendy that she gives to fellow parents, and I appreciate it so much!

    SHE’S BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yay! I am so glad that this show is back for season 2. This podcast is incredibly educational, vulnerable, raw, and therapeutic. I have learned so much. Every time I listen, I can’t help but to get emotional. I can somehow or someway relate to every story. Dr.Mogel is so good at what she does. She is such a kind soul, intelligent and relatable. Thank you for bringing it back!! I hope we have many more seasons to come.

    Please come back!!
This is one of my favorite podcasts!! I found little treasures of knowledge in each episode, even within situations that differ from my own. Even from the 11 or so episodes released I quote Wendy often. I wish Wendy could be my therapist, lol. We need more! Please release more episodes!

    Enjoyable
I enjoy Dr. Wendy’s advice and appreciate the diversity of families on the podcast. A couple nitpicky things… As a listener, I would appreciate a more detailed summary of each podcast when I am choosing which episode. They are very brief and only mention the smallest random tidbit of the conversation. Also, is it necessary to point out every time someone’s voice “goes up” in the podcast? I understand that Dr. Wendy is pointing out their heightened emotions and vulnerability, but it is such an uncomfortable moment and feels almost condescending.

    Love this show!!
I wish every family was required to listen to this show before raising children lol
  • crh83
    Just ok
There are some better parenting podcasts out there. I do not enjoy Wendy’s tone with guests and as others mention, she interrupts often. I wanted to like it more but it’s a little slow for me and the stories/scenarios aren’t always relatable.

    Anticipatory anxiety? Guilty!
I don’t even have children yet but I LOVE this podcast. I started listening out of fascination for the EQ insight into other people’s lives and relationships, and also a desire to prepare for life with kids. This last ‘preparation’ approach, I’ve come to learn from this podcast, is probably some neurotic combination of ‘anticipatory anxiety’ and control issues. But how good to realize it and process it with the friendly, comforting, and communicatively talented words of Dr Wendy Mogel! I can empathize with nearly every parent and story on this show and, most importantly, learn from them!

    Helpful non reactive family advice
I have long appreciated Mogel’s books, and have found it so helpful to listen to these episodes. I love the way she highlights the beauty in each of the families with whom she talks. I’ve learned a lot about my ten year old through listening and have started gossiping more about characters in books we read, and even broken down and created a path for him to show he can be responsible dog owner. I look forward to next season!

    Love this show!
Even if my situation isn’t identical to the parent(s) on the podcast, I learn something helpful every episode! I can’t wait to listen each week and love Dr. Mogel’s approach. She is so understanding and nonjudgmental. She makes it all so much simpler!
  • Ellesaur4
    I’m not the only one!
Finally a very realistic look into the lives of families of all shapes, sizes, experiences, colors, backgrounds, trials and privilege. I am not the only parent or mom who is going through everyday wondering if I’m “doing it right”. I appreciate so much her plain look at what seem like complex issues, for everyone else, and also the courage of those choosing to share their family’s complexities. Thank you for your beautifully simple perspectives and techniques.
  • ThiefofJoy
Informative and fun..but most of all, not sugarcoating!
I love her approach at all the different family situations, relationships. Realistic and funny, but kind and relatable. She’s great, can’t wait for more episodes!!
  • KateWools90
    We need more!
I LOVE this podcast! It’s fascinating to see the dynamics of different family units. I don’t have children and I need this podcast to be 3 hours longer each week lol. I hope Dr. Wendy comes back for another season! Thanks for the good advice I can take into my imaginary parenting life haha.

Great podcast even for people without kids!
I don’t have kids but I LOVE this podcast. Which may seem weird but I have nieces I absolutely adore and at some point (maybe?) will have kids of my own and this feels extremely helpful! Even though I can’t relate to most of what’s talked about I find it extremely beneficial to listen to and process the trials and tribulations of parenting. It seems really great to get ahead of these things before becoming a parent.

    Master wordsmith
Wendy is a master at stringing words together. I listen to her so intently that I sometimes forget to breathe. The way that she picks up on every nuance- inflection, breath, sound, etc. and always gets to the root of the issue is beyond masterful. Her advice is direct and always seems achievable. I just adore her. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

    my favorite parenting podcast
I’m a Mom to a 7 year old daughter. I’ve co-parented with my daughters Dad, my ex-husband, for 6 years since our divorce and I’ve been remarried 4 out of those 6 years. I’m also an only child raising an only child. It’s an interesting dynamic to say the least. This podcast is one of my ultimate favorites because I didn’t have siblings growing up, so I never saw my parents parenting other children. The first time I changed a diaper in my life was the day I birthed my daughter. I love hearing Dr Mogel’s advice on how to parent children with personalities and traits I’ve never been exposed to. It helps me so much with being a Mom, not only my daughter, but to the other children in our lives. I also feel it’s subtly preparing me for the parenting journey ahead. I recommend this podcast to all my friends. Thank you for leaving us with this gem. 💖

    Not just for parents!!
I look forward to this show every week and I don’t even have kids! The sessions feel so human, intimate, and honest. Life lessons and family dynamics you can relate to regardless of what your family structure looks like. Blessing to hear these parents share their stories, frustrations, hopes, dreams, and annoyances. Love this podcast!
