Great Disasters

210

Whether natural or man-made, disasters attract a strange mixture of horror and fascination. However, the spectacle of devastation is only ever one part of the story. Take a closer look, and you will find tales of extraordinary human endurance and heroism, stories that veer from the horrific to the oddly humorous, and lessons that can be learned to make our world safer.

From the Titanic to the Costa Concordia, the Station nightclub fire to the Pulse nightclub shooting, these extraordinary events – and the people involved – are examined on the Great Disasters podcast, written, researched, recorded and produced by me, Kari Fay.

From official reports, first-person accounts, and contemporary media, I delve into the often-appalling details of these events to bring you the full story.

    Amazing
I’m so glad I could find a disaster podcast without the explicit rating so I can listen to it! I love it! Keep up the good work!

    Other shows should take notes
No nonsense, no dramatic music. Just the facts. Which is all a show like this needs. Excellent.

    Like banter? Look elsewhere
I listen to dozens of podcasts, and great disasters is in my top 3, thanks to its solid research, interesting subject matter, and excellent delivery. There’s something about KF’s voice that makes hearing about the worst disasters in history an almost soothing experience. This is my favorite “hidden gem” pod.

    Great
Well-researched, thoughtfully presented recounting and analysis of tragedies — what happened, what went wrong, what then changed to hopefully prevent repeats — with a back catalogue you can dive into. I find the single host with a script format a refreshing break from the more jocular, conversational, digression-y style of many other podcasts. I also very much appreciate that the host usually mentions what reference materials she’s drawing from.

    Highly recommend!
I just discovered Great Disasters podcasts a couple days ago but I’ve been enjoying them immensely. Kari does a wonderful job. I can’t believe she’s a one woman show! But she pulls it off and brings you stories that will grab your attention and make you want to play the next. Well done Kari!

    Excellent and Informative Podcast!
Kari has an awesome, soothing voice and presents each subject matter with passion and respect for the victims. She is not preachy and does not try to shove a political / world view down your “ear hole”. She gives great information and details in each podcast! Thanks Kari!!

Well researched and easy to listen to
One of my favorite podcasts. Thank you for producing these.

    Great show
Not sensational at all, Kari shows genuine respect for the dead, which is a big plus for me. Interesting, her descriptions perfectly strike the sweet spot of being technical enough for a layman to follow along without treating the listeners as idiots. The only real drawback is poor audio quality especially in early episodes, which can make listening difficult if using poor quality earphones or with a lot of background noise. Really hope this podcast is revived in the near future, ideally with a better microphone.

    One of the best!!!
This podcast is one of the best researched and well presented podcasts I’ve ever listened to. Just her 9/11 5 part series deserves an award. It was so thorough and had so many details I’d never heard before in the 20 years since the attacks. Kari is a wonderful host and her presentation is superb. I only wish she did more but obviously being a one woman show is a lot of work. Kudos to you Kari!!
  • FashionandFaith
    Fantastic
I’ve enjoyed this podcast for quite a while now. Kari Faye does an excellent job on every aspect of production and presentation. Her multi-part series on 9/11 was simply exquisite.

    LISTEN!!!
This podcast needs to be heard! I’ve been meaning to review it for some time, but now I must. I just listened to the series on 9/11… No where else have I heard the detail that Kari offers. She doesn’t shy away from truth; in ANY of her stories.

    Amazing, Detailed Stories
Incredibly well researched. Even if you know the story that’s being told, Kari will doubtlessly share details you’ve never heard before. Recommend.

    Love itttt
I love this podcast. I get so excited when I see a new one in my feed. I love hearing in depth what actually happened from many perspectives and the narrator really paints a picture for the listener. Can’t recommend this enough.

    Riveting, Insightful, Informative
I just got through all 48 episodes. Ms. Fay strikes the right balance between telling what happened, especially from the point of view of those who were there, and explaining why it happened. She explains things in a way that is usually very understandable (I still don’t quite understand train signals 🙂). For example, if you’ve ever spilled water carrying a full bowl, you can picture exactly how a ferry boat ended up on its side. And balancing the sadness of the losses are often the tales of incredibly brave and selfless acts, such as the man who turns himself into a human bridge to safety, or the nurse who uses her lipstick to make sure train accident victims don’t get too much morphine. Finally I have learned quite a bit of history from these podcasts, including much more about the Tulsa massacre than I knew before (Ms. Fay is at the top of her game in that episode, it may be her best which is saying something). I can’t recommend this enough.

Everyone should give this podcast the love it deserves
Just started listening in the past week and I'm hooked! She gives so much detail to each disaster, but isn't boring in her story telling. She's got a nice soothing voice and is very articulate. You can tell she really does her research, reading all the newspaper articles published at the time. And she always provides the best survivor's testimony. Thank you Kari for this wonderful podcast!

    What could go wrong!?!
Keri Fay’s Great Disasters is a great podcast series because she uses each episode as case studies not only about what can go wrong, but also how individuals and society often contribute to makes things worse. A positive I take from this podcast is the life and death importance of good governance in mitigating and sometimes even preventing disaster. Keri’s podcast should be required reading for anyone involved in human society especially those in leadership positions. Can’t wait for more and I will be contributing a bit financially to keep this going.

    So Thourough
Kari does such thourough research that I often learn new facts about the disasters even after listening to several different telling of the story before listening to this podcast. The show is informative while being respectful to the victims of the event. I love this podcast so much and wish it could come out more often but I so look forward to when a new episode does come out

    Election Day MASSACRE
Got my blood boiling!!! White people say “that was so long ago”. According to white people, since black people can NOW vote, the atrocities committed by white racist, racist weaklings & racist sympathizers literally think things should be considered square. HA! Pay with YOUR blood.
  • Lexifitzy

    Exceptional insight
I listen to this podcast while at work here in the US. The narrator is well informed, and well adapt at drawing you into each story, and making you feel the empathy for the people who suffer such tragic fates, as well as heroism that accompanies these tales as well. Well worth subscribing!
  • Calamity Kit
    Well-crafted Podcast
This podcast has been a wonderful find. I appreciate the thorough research that has gone into each episode, and the careful and compassionate delivery. Every episode has been compelling, and I look forward to future episodes.
  • Dieseltuned
    Had my support until
It is a pretty good show until you said that we should “support black lives matter”. I have unsubscribed. Do you not know what black lives matter stands for. Take a look around at the cities across America Antifa and blm are terrible organizations. Supporting racial equality is one thing and is great but not those organizations. Try watching something else besides your liberal media and you will see what they are. Why on earth did you get political?
