    Interesting stories but…
I like the concept. Very interesting stories but the tone of the narrator never changes. She can be talking about an ice pick going through a person’s head and use the same bubbly tone and inflections as if she is describing a day at Disney World..

    i love brenda's eccentricities
the grammar errors i find incredibly endearing, and your voice is nice to listen to.

    Horrifying History
I would give your podcast 5/5 stars but you need to check a few issues of grammar and pronunciation. For example, a person is ‘hanged’ not ‘hung’, it’s ‘she and her husband’ not ‘her and her husband’, it’s ‘stories and tales that have been told’ not ‘has been told’, it’s ‘there are no instances of proof’ not ‘is no instances of proof’. From the Brown Lady of Raynham Hall episode the ‘h’ is silent also the ‘s’ in viscount is also silent. From the episode about Agrippina the Younger the the stress is on the third syllable in the name Agrippina. Thank you for your attention to these matters, otherwise your podcast is fantastic and I love to listen to it as I’m going to sleep.

I would h as ve given at least 4 stars but there was an ad for oprah’s show in your line up. Sorry, I don’t support blood sucking racists

I love this! Just one tiny detail…
I love this podcast, it’s my go-to for my sick days and when in genuinely bored. She gives me comfort! I love learning history and since maybe age 10 have loved scary facts, later on age 12 loving scary murders and history school won’t tell me. This podcast also gives heads up about things that I should be aware of, like abuse and aggressive murder. It’s great! One tiny retail. She handles acronyms very slowly, and, it’s everything personal, my undiagnosed OCD hates that. That’s really it! Otherwise, one of my favorites! Also, she said Jean in a French way and it’s awesome! SHJAWN! I love it :3>

    Grammar
Echoing the remarks of other reviewers I have to mention the egregious grammatical errors-animals and humans are not hung, they are hanged. I wonder why the presenter would spend precious time on a segment she would end with the words, “but there is no truth to this story”. There are wonderful stories about the history, architecture, cemeteries, and legends-many based on history. Why not include them.

    Interesting, but frustrating!
I’ve been a subscriber to this podcast for at least a year, but I must tell you, the narrator’s grammar errors are frequent and maddening, as is her liberal slant that lacks objectivity. She also has great trouble pronouncing common words. I will say that the stories are interesting and thought provoking, but some legitimate editing and producing would go a long way to clean this thing up. She’s obviously a native English speaker. It makes me feel better about my American public education, wherein I was educated in the English language and its grammatical rules and verb conjugation.

    Good and Bad
I love the stories this podcast puts together, I think the information is great and gives some good insight…. However, for starters the main speaker often mispronounces things REALLY bad and just moves past it so it will catch you off guard, my favorite was how she said “pat-rein” or “pattern”. What’s been driving me nuts though is the guest speakers, I feel like that’s the majority of the newer episodes and they are NOT good at all. Bad grammar, can’t hold a pitch, the writing sounds like AI… it’s just not good anymore. I loved this podcast but it really fell off.

    Stories great - host bad
I love the stories. They are unique and interesting. The host needs a public speaking and grammar class. It sounds like crappy AI is narrating. The pitch of her voice never changes to reflect what is being narrated. Drives me crazy. I’ve tried listening multiple times in hopes she will improve.

    Easy listening, Enjoyable tales
I really enjoy listening to this podcast.

    Grammar
I like this podcast but the grammar mistakes are very hard to listen to.

    Like it but…
I don’t want to be a negative Nancy here so I’ll start with the pros: the stories are very interesting, filled with facts and the show is well produced. Now the cons: (I hope this can serve the host for her own professional podcast development and I hope it’s not taken as a bash or hate) the grammatical errors are frustrating. My personal opinion: if you are producing a podcast you should be able to pronounce words correctly. I get it- some words are difficult but the majority of the words that are mispronounced are easy ones. It’s a pretty simple fix. My biggest pet peeve- “especially” it’s not EX-pecially.

    Not for me
I have tried several episodes, but sadly this podcast is not for me. This host needs a course in grammar. This may not be troublesome to some, for me it is too distracting. I’m disappointed.

    WOW
I like that she calls a vagina a vagine. 5 stars

    Commercials
Love the podcast, the only thing I don’t like are all the commercials. There are so many for a 30-40 minute podcast. Wish there were fewer.

    Great show
    I love it

    I’m noticing a “pattrin” of mispronunciations…
The content of the podcast is interesting, which keeps me coming back. However, the misuse of certain words, grammar mistakes, and mispronunciations of common words make this podcast difficult to listen to at times. I just finished the episode on “Serial Killers Who Were Never Caught” and she pronounces “pattern” as “pat-rin” 3 different times. Like…what??
  • dharma rose
    Interesting but
She calls a vagina a vagine. And Sonny sounds like Sounny.
  • kjhuyit ghtyrz
    I want to like it
The content is interesting. I can get past most grammar problems and an occasional mispronunciation can be overlooked but it’s so frequent that it’s a huge distraction. It should be part of your basic research to learn to pronounce Mr. Spielberg’s name rather than mispronouncing it repeatedly in an episode. It’s not Steelburg. And genre does not have a d in it. Keep at it but maybe get an editor to review before you publish?
  • Thatphillychik32
    Too many ads.
Too many ads. 30 min pod but multiple ads, annoying. Names pronounced wrong. “Steven Steelberg”? It’s only 11 min eps and there’s multiple ads throughout the show. Kinda annoying. I don’t think the host is from the US so ppl should lay off on the mispronunciations. It’s presumptuous to assume everyone is American.
  • theywerealltaken00
    Great content, weirdly bubbly narration
Love the content of these podcasts. However, the narrator speaks with such a bubbly and happy tone, you would think she’s telling fairytales. Just not the right tone/mood for the theme and content. The constant repetitive ads are very obnoxious as well.

    My kind of history
You would have found me snoozing in my history classes in school, but if they were teaching this kind of history I would have been hooked!
  • Lightning121710
    Titanic?
The Titanic episode was a little tone deaf, considering the very recent loss of life in the tourist submersible heading to visit the shipwreck.

    Great podcast
Hey Brenda! It’s been awhile since we last spoke but I wanted to reach out and leave you some love. I don’t know why you’re getting the negative reviews you have gotten but I have to disagree with them. You are well spoken and your podcast is actually really incredible. Much love to you and please keep it going 💜🙏

    Started out good
I really enjoyed the content and length of the older shows. They have gotten much shorter and the same commercial plays over and over. I believe the most recent podcast was 25 minutes in length but heard the same commercial 5 times. I get you need sponsors but this is over kill.

    Mispronunciations & Voice Issues
So much potential with this show as the content is good, but the host’s disregard for proper pronunciation of well-known places and names, as well as a nasally voice sounding robotic make this a tough show to retain in my subscribed-to list. If I’m pruning, this one may be one that quickly goes…
  • Crimepodna
    Really interesting
Interesting stories and I love the delivery. On my regular podcast rotation now!

    On the fence
There’s a lot to like about this podcast but some things are a bit grating. There are occasional factual mistakes, poor grammar, and I just can’t shake the thought that the voice sounds so robotic. Not sure about this one.
  • PennyPotential
    Just google “How to Pronounce”
There are lots of reviews from a way back suggesting that the host invest in editing. According to the recent episode on devil chairs, New FOUND land is in Lambador. Have you ever heard of a Lambador retriever? Long words are hard, but we have google. It isn’t hard to learn proper pronunciation, which should be part of the research process. At this point, it’s just blatant disregard, so why bother listening?

The Stanley Hotel in Colorado was the inspiration behind Stephen King’s book “The Shining”, not the Banff Springs Hotel.

    Love
This is a awesome podcast hi!!!
  • Jaanbunny
    Good podcast
This is a very good podcast. Good topics, good research, host has a good voice. My only mark against it is the host’s pronunciations. Some random words I would understand, but there are everyday words that the host mispronounces that are just maddening. If you can look past this give it a go.

    Addictive Podcast
I love this Cast, I listen to this podcast every chance I get, and recommend it to everyone I know. Brenda thank you for all the amazing stories you bring to us every week
  • CJIam12
    Love it!
I’ve always enjoyed history but dark history is my favorite and Brenda does an excellent job presenting such great topics!
  • kiwi0699
    Highly recommend
Brenda has such a relaxing voice to listening to, and she does such a good job providing the history of the topic she is covering. Her podcast is very binge able and informative.
  • Wood Sprite
    Has potential
Great topics, I love the short format. Brenda’s voice is very easy to listen to. But I will agree with other reviewers that the mispronunciations and bad grammar make it hard to make it through more than one episode at a time. Having someone proofread and/or listen before recording would do wonders for this pod.

A promising podcast which fell short
I chose “The Mysterious Disappearance of the Sodder Children” as the episode in this podcast that comes to mind the most when writing this review. The concept is great, as is the allure of the mystery at hand, however almost seven minutes of the podcast is devoted to Mussolini which was a turn off to me, as it would have been sufficient to simply say he was a Fascist Dictator of Italy, etc. instead the presenter felt the need to narrate Mussolini’s life story such as the dictator stabbing students in his youth, which was entirely irreverent to five missing children. I would also add that the speed at which the narrator speaks is abnormally fast and could be slowed for the listeners sake.
  • CindyWDST
    Informative
Host provides concise information about the case or history they are covering -Crime Diner
  • The catbear
    Please look up pronunciations
I’m about 10 episodes and and it’s driving me crazy that things that I thought of common knowledge are being mispronounced. I can let your pronunciation of Edisto slide but who doesn’t know the name of Tennessee Williams play the glass menagerie? On a positive note I find these subjects incredibly interesting and well researched. But please, please work on pronunciation.

Why does this illiterate person have a podcast?
Painful to listen to with likely paid reviews. Trash.
  • Hanhan3774
    Great Content, Poor Grammar
I love the content of this podcast - all the stories are fascinating and the episode lengths are perfect. However, I agree with other reviews that bring this up. The research and show script REALLY needs to be proofread before recording. There are so many strange mispronunciations, made-up words (adding -ed to the end of past tense words, etc.), and incorrect use of conjugations / tense (was instead of were, etc.).

    👏🏻
The host knocks it out of the park each and every time. I love learning something new every time I listen. The hard work and research that goes into this podcast really shows!!!

    Great podcast!!
I really am enjoying this podcast. I was hooked after listening to the first few episodes. I love the way Brenda tell stories and her approach and the topics are subjects I enjoy. If you like history, true crime, Folklore and the Supernatural then this podcast is for you.

    Horrifying Histories
A great podcast with wonderfully creepy content!! It’s deceptive, because Brenda, the host, has an upbeat, perky voice… but ooooh! She delivers the GOODS! Highly recommend!
  • Ted Bendy
    Great job!
Awesome job, really getting into it. Only negative/helpful feedback would be I’d like the reading to be slower, Hope it helps! Great show. Sounds good, music, theme. The stories I’ve listened to so far are good.
  • gymleadermel
    Good but a bit frustrating
I hear about this podcast from a friend and I wanted to give it a try. I like to listen from the very beginning and continue the episodes in chronological order. So I started! My problem was with audio issues. I kept thinking my internet was bad or speakers until I read other reviews. I was not the only one. It is very interesting and very entertaining. Hopefully the audio is better in later episodes
  • steamy-bunz
    Insensitive
I really enjoy this podcast, but it’s newest episode Silent Twins really turned me off of it. A very insensitive portrayal of two sisters who were put through so much in their lives. I can see an episode being made about how horrifying they were treated and what they went through (moving to a predominantly white area as some of the only black children, suffering bullying, both being institutionalized for 10 years because of drug/alcohol addiction and their selective mutism). Saying that a girl was possessing her twin and her sister was free after her death, in doing so also taking June’s own words out of context to fit this narrative…yeah, I think I’m going to find another spooky history podcast to listen yo.

    Favorite
I love this podcast and it’s one of my top favorites to listen to. She’s done her research, not just one sided research either, she gets both sides and i absolutely love it. I didn’t realize till now that I’m almost finished with all her episodes and now I’m desperately trying to find something like her podcast till there’s new episodes. My only issue is that sometimes the sound gets too loud or too quiet randomly in some episodes. But it’s not so bad.
  • Ms.DeprCakes12
    My Favorite Podcast!
I just recently discovered this podcast and i’m addicted ! i love that every episode goes straight into the story instead of a bunch of random talk. Some of the episodes are quick and others take more time to listen to and i love that. i listen all day at work! very educational and entertaining!
