    Dev is the man.
Loving and collecting Devin’s music over the past 25 years or so, it’s awesome to hear a recount of each of those periods and all that went into it. But aside from that, there’s some deep self analysis that’s been helpful to me personally.

    Part of the journey
I only recently began my Devin Townsend journey, having never heard of him until about a year ago. Not only do I get to discover his numerous songs, but this podcast allows me to hear their story as I go. I pause every episode to listen to the song he’s referencing, getting a rich inside view. Thank you Devin for everything that you do.

    Depends what you came for
If you want to learn about the making of the albums this podcast can be sometimes rewarding or very frustrating. If you want to learn about Devin and his life journey then this is as frank and detailed as you could hope for.

Episodes are hit or miss, depending on what you’re here for
If you want to hear stories about the albums, songs and stories behind the music, then some episodes are great(Ocean Machine, City, Synchestra). If you are into esoteric rambling where he spends as much time talking about why he continues to do podcasts and regrets without being very specific about anything, there’s a lot of that too(Infinity, Accelerated Evo). I prefer the former, so I find a lot of this to be akin to reading Dostoevsky, sitting through the frustrating bits to get to the gems. Ultimately, YMMV

    Insight into the creative process
These stories, insights, and reflections are wonderfully engaging. Each album is a journey and I am grateful Devin has used this medium as a way to share how each album came about.

    More than music
Thank you, Devin. Anyone that cares to listen can learn much about the the albums and music created, but more importantly about self-reflection. This series is intensely emotional and honest. It has been very therapeutic to listen to. It is entertaining, sad, fun, scary, and emotional. Again, thank you.

So much more interesting than I thought it would be
Amazing to hear these stories, level of detail, and honesty from Devin surrounding the creation of these albums. I didn’t expect to hear all I am, and it’s really fascinating. I appreciate Devin’s commitment to doing this in such an open and vulnerable manner.

    Personal and in depth
Devin breaks down his albums and his life in a very personal and detailed way that is not only sincere but wildly interesting to listen to.

    Fascinating
If you’re a fan of Devin’s music, you’ll love hearing his inspirations, pitfalls, anecdotes, recording notes, etc about each album and it’s partner album. No abandoned projects or bloviating here (lookin at you Jimny).

    An inspiration for my trajectory
I have been listening to Devy since I first heard City back in 1997. Since then I have grown and changed just as he has. Emotionally, artistically, mentally... and listening to him recount his life, and state of mind is refreshing. It’s nice to not feel alone in this world. Him and I are the same age. And mentally I have gone through a similar trajectory. Learning to feed my anger rather than let it consume me. Learning how to love, and live peacefully and treat myself with respect. All of it that he touches can’t just be my journey too. I’m sure there are countless fans listening to him talk about these moments in time that feel validated. So I would like to thank Devy for being there then and now. But come on... you’re leaving us hanging.

    Dev goes deep
Listened to the AE/SYL episode, because I love Dev, been a fan for a long time, and those are maybe my two favorite albums he’s done. Turns out he doesn’t like those albums much, haha. But he explains why in a way that makes complete sense. This feels like therapy for Devin, and he has a gift of gab, for sure. Talks forever. He gets deep and basically interviews himself in a way that I don’t think I could ever do. The man’s a genius, a consummate artist, and as a fan I appreciate the opportunity to listen to him open up about his feelings making these records at that point in his artistic journey. Thanks for sharing Hevy Devy!

    Welp. F**k this podcast..
If you’ve followed Devin for any amount of time, you know that he has a history of abandoning projects on a whim. Then he bloviates about the spiritual growth he experienced in talking himself into quitting. Lame.

    Best podcast ever
I love the in depth breakdown of his mindset during this period.

The Frank Zappa of our generation
I’ve been a fan of Devin’s since about 2003 and being able to hear the man himself describe the albums and where he was at the time is refreshing in a day with so many ego trips. Stay Groovy.

Dev, thank you so much for doing this! I first heard City back in ‘97 and searched out Ocean Machine immediately after. Really fascinating to hear what went into these early releases and can’t wait to make my way through each episode. Kudos!

Thank you Devin for doing this podcasts. I have been following your career since the beginning (lucky me) and the level of detail you provide here is amazing. It helps me place it in my own personal context. Your voice is soothing and clear. Please never change Devin!... also giant kudos to the silent queen who makes it all possible, Tracy.

    Healing power
Regardless of familiarity with his music, these episodes are relatable. So well executed as if paced out with a mental script. Yet with an authentic and organic flow allowing for extreme moments of vulnerability. Love.

    A visionary in detail
This man has had a TREMENDOUS impact on my life through music since I discovered Ziltoid in 2008. This podcast is exactly what I wanted and needed in my life. Thank you Devy for all you do.

People throw this word around far too frequently, but I truly believe that Devin Townsend is a musical genius. His Ocean Machine record back in the 90s came to me at a crucial time in my life, and nothing has been the same for me since then. Without his profound influence on my appreciation for music, to say nothing of my outlook on life, I don’t know what I would be today. Words do my feelings no justice. This podcast was a welcome surprise for me during this dark time sheltering in place during a pandemic. Thanks so much for bringing it to the iTunes platform!

An artist reflects, and we see ourselves in the mirror
I’ve only been listening to Devin since mid-2015, but in that time I’ve absorbed a lot of his music and as much of his other material as I can. This podcast has, so far, been an incredible journey back into the history of metal through his lens, and every episode has been a revelation of the man making that music, but has also shown me what parts of myself I see in the notes and lyrics. Even having not listened to much SYL, I enjoy the stories and reflection. And it kinda makes me want to check those albums out, knowing now what Devin has taken years to articulate.
