Wayward Guide For The Untrained Eye

630

Wayward Guide is a fictional investigative podcast about the sordid world of local politics, backroom dealings, and werewolves. When an alluring corporate corruption story falls unexpectedly into their laps, twin podcasting-team Artemis and Paul Schue-Horyn are given the chance to prove themselves as top hosts at the American Podcasting Network. But opportunity soon leads to tragedy as the eccentric and divided locals they are interviewing in the small California mining town of Connor Creek start dropping like flies. With the threads of their investigation quickly becoming tangled and rumors of a bloodthirsty werewolf on the loose, the Schue-Horyn twins need to decide who to trust and the price they’re willing to pay for a juicy story. Wayward Guide features the talents of Mary Kate Wiles, Steve Zaragoza, Darren Criss, Sean Astin, Carlos Valdes, Titus Makin, and more! Check out the companion series on YouTube to find out the hairy truth about Connor Creek.

Amazing! Watch along with the YouTube series!
To anyone giving less than 5 stars hasn’t done this correctly, if you complain about the lack of werewolves, watch the series. It explains a lot of the podcast, as they are companions.

I have a new favorite podcast
This is my new favorite podcast, the people I saw giving less than five star reviews didn’t watch the show which makes everything make a lot more sense, or just lack some common sense. So, please watch the show beforehand, I promise it’s amazing. Also stan the mayor 😌✨

    Fun, adventure, mystery!
Be sure to watch along with the YouTube series for the best experience. Delightful & creative use of the medium, a real treat!

    A Narrative Tour de Force
Incredibly clever choices of narrative that ties beautifully with the YouTube series with the same name. The story is eminently singable and it has enough depth that a second go-around is likely to shift the perspective and reveal even more clever choices taken to redirect and capitalize on the true crime podcast trope in a distinct way that the Tin Can Bros and Team Starkid are known for. Beautifully scored and magnificently resonant amidst a time of fear and civil disagreement.

Mediocre and a lack of werewolves
I went into this hoping for a funny and compelling mystery in a small town. That there would be a fun and interesting cast of characters and the true villain would be a surprise. Most importantly, I wanted the werewolves the podcast promised me. It unfortunately fell short. The hosts are extraordinarily bland tropes: smart, sticks to the facts girl and her “hilarious” brother. Neither are compelling and never did I feel their bond. There’s an episode that says they had a fight, Artemis found out that Paul was hurt, and rushed to him. ALL of that was done in narration. I never heard any genuine emotion from these hosts and the story suffered for it. Not to mention the rest of the cast. Wayward Guide falls for the trap of “small weird town = everyone is a moron”. I didn’t feel either the comradery that they muse was lost due to the werewolves scare or that falling apart. They just felt like dipshits the whole time and the story suffered for that. I wanted to care about these characters, but they were all punchlines. Oh, and also — if you promise werewolves in your description, don’t only properly introduce the idea of werewolves halfway through. I don’t even know *why* that was the conclusion they drew and not, you know, just a wolf attack.

I listened, but I’m not happy about it
A collection of cliches and superficial characters stitched together by such a trite plot it almost insults the listener. Most five star reviews were given before any episodes were published...if you’re looking for a good fictional serialized investigative podcast, there are so many other options. Also, why does a “rural California town” have southern and midwestern accents?

    Fictional wonder
Great show, just finished the last episode and I really felt invested in these characters. Also I love that theme!! The show was fun to listen to, the characters were engaging and it had a colorful cast. I have a few complaints with it though, I thought that the pacing was great up until the final episode where it felt like when they got to the antagonist of the story they started rushing it to make it to the end and it rushed the pace. It was also a little hard to follow what was happening and who was talking at times, especially since the podcast wasn’t linear all the time. My last criticism and slight spoiler alert I guess, the ending while rushed felt a little unfulfilled, and while I’m sure that’s what they were going for there were a lot of questions left unanswered and not in a good way, it left with confusing questions. After all of that I still say it’s a fantastic podcast, it kept my interest and not a lot of podcasts do that. And, if you’re a fan of The Adventure Zone and liked the Amnesty Arc, you’ll like this podcast it shared a lot of the same feeling, tone and music.

    Outstanding Podcast/Show!
This show has been the highlight of my week. I look forward to it every week. The storyline is extremely good, interesting, and filled with twists and turns you didn’t see coming. I love the idea of the show on YouTube with the podcast, it makes it so much more fun to watch and listen. It almost feels like you’re involved in the story, and listening to the character’s podcast. This show has been absolutely amazing! Great job Tin Can Bros! Definitely recommend it to anyone who loves mystery, thriller, and, most definitely, comedy. This show has a piece of every genre for anyone to enjoy.

    Amazing
I watched this after the finale, but knowing the ending, I find the insights of the podcast charming, and the characters are more fleshed out.

    So Fricken Good
Honestly, they outdid themselves. The way they made a podcast inside of a podcast is amazing. The characters and the story are so good. I never really listen to podcasts (let alone rate them) but Wayward Guide was so good I have to. 100/10 tbh

    Unique, Profound, all-around AWESOME!
I have so many things to say, but I’ll keep it simple. I’m simply blown away. The multi-media format of Wayward Guide is so unique and works so effectively. Every single podcast episode, I’m forced to relate the “theme” of the episode to my own life, because of how well-written this is and how universal the message is (with a large dose of whimsy and fantasy). The show/podcast is just busting with personality, and the balance of different themes is perfect. What’s even more astounding is how seamless it is, given that the podcast was recorded during a pandemic! Thank you, TCB, for all you bring to our lives <3

    An audio escape!
I’m loving this podcast - I came for the cast and crew (a lot of whom I’ve enjoyed in other projects) and stayed for the delightful content. Love a mystery? Humor? Catchy theme songs? Take a listen!

    Incredible
Absolutely love this series. The podcast is amazing on its own but is enjoyed best with the companion YouTube episodes. It’s just just the right amount of political drama with the supernatural. I look forward to both the pod and vids every week and will likely rewatch and relisten to the whole series when the finale is released.

    So fun and well done!
This is so well done. I love the release schedule in conjunction with the web series. Honestly, it gives me something to look forward to during this strange/horrible time. I especially love hearing how Artemis and Paul choose to frame the story. Plus we get to hear conversations in the podcast we don’t see in the web series. Can’t say enough about Tin Can Brothers and their work—just so, so good!
  • SodaPop9321
    Totally Awesome!
This is such a fun way to watch the show and get more from it! Clever idea from the amazing Tin Can Bros! I have yet to be disappointed by any content they produce and this is just another great addition to their clever minds!

    Paul ruins everything
Paul is insufferable whenever he tries to be funny. It’s like someone shouting the “Who’s On First” skit in your ear for 20 minutes.
  • I❤️BusinessTravel
    Must see TV...oh wait...
Awesome podcast adding so much to the viewing. And by viewing I mean the you tube show, not dead bodies. Love Love Love it. You get hooked in from the beginning. Funny and engaging. Sucked right in ❤️😘

Great podcast I just wish either the episodes were longer or they would drop the whole season at the same time. It they still get 5 because story, acting, production and music is phenomenal.

    You won’t regret this
This group of actors, writers, and musicians are beyond talented. Everything they’ve produced has been 5 star quality, and Wayward Guide is just the newest, latest and greatest production. These podcasts are captivating both through the writing and acting. And the companion side videos are just as engaging and entertaining. If there’s anything to know about Tin Can Brothers and Starkid is that this series will only increase in quality as time goes on. I never write reviews, but this deserves as much support as I can offer. Seriously, cannot recommend this more.

    Cool idea, excited for more!
I love the idea of a podcast combined with a web series. After watching/listening to the first episode of each, I’m very impressed so far and can’t wait to see where they take it! Charming characters and a slow-burning mystery make this is a delight. Great job so far, Tin Can Bros!

    This got me into podcasts!
I’m not one for podcasts. Never have been. I’ve tried it a few times, but nothing seems to stick to me or keeps me coming back. BUT. The Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye has me hooked. While only two episodes have been released so far, I’m already excited and interested to know and learn more. I can’t wait to see (or hear) what happens next. And it’s not just the storyline that I’m interested in! I really like the voices of the two main characters—Artemis and Paul, and the music is perfection. It fits the show’s theme so beautifully, and it’s super catchy. I’ve been humming it everywhere I go since listening (for a second time!) to show. Major props to the Tin Can Brothers for creating a show that I can’t stand thinking about, and made me start listening to podcasts!!
  • upsetKiddo
Like Nightvale and teen wolf had a baby and the baby was a murder mystery
A show and also a podcast?? Really fun! It’s got the creepy small town vibes that I love, and it’s got the really eccentric people that call back to the oddness of NightVale and the spooky supernatural murder mystery of Teen Wolf without the tweeny drama! It’s the best of all worlds, and I adore the double layer of getting to experience the fright then find out how these two interpret what they see and hear!!
  • Carleigh Y
    Let’s gooo!!!!
While I’m still excited for the series, I am so hyped for the podcast aspect of the story telling! This will take us into their world and that kind of connection is so rare in shows! I have high hopes for this! This is such a cool podcast!
