Gender: A Wider Lens

539

In this podcast, now in its fourth year, therapists Stella O'Malley and Sasha Ayad take a deep dive into the psychological and cultural forces impacting the social changes around "gender." Through interviews with researchers, doctors, therapists, parents, detransitioners, and others, Sasha and Stella's podcast is a "must listen" for anyone trying to navigate the current gender landscape. With their sharp analytical minds and deep compassionate hearts, Stella and Sasha have also become known throughout many parent networks as lighthouses in the midst of some very stormy seas. Previous guests include Helen Joyce, Jesse Singal, Leor Sapir, Kathleen Stock, Jamie Reed, Peter Boghossian and more.

Content excellent, but the audio is very bad
The audio quality of this show is simply not up to the current standards. Always sounds like you’re in a closet or something. Simple fix for a good audio tech.

    Big Announcement!
Stella and Sasha, I’m so excited about both of your new projects! Yes! Something IS happening in society! And yes, we need both the granular view and the macro view on this, probably THE issue of our time. I love the interaction between the two of you so much, but the prospect of these 2 new podcasts is exciting, too. Thank you.

    A ‘must listen’ show
Hands down the best podcast on the subject - really a wonderful program. Should be required listening for anyone working in medical, legal or educational realms.

Finger on the pulse of gender politics
So many important voices are interviewed on this pod and provide a wide range of views.

    A boring and bigoted blandness
From typical anti trans tropes to reinforcing gender stereotypes by any means, this podcast offers nothing.

    I tried
Came with an open mind hoping to hear a real conversation. What I found was a myopic diatribe from one host wrestling with internalized transphobia and unhealed religious trauma. This woman has no business working with clients until she heals her own issues.

Sasha & Stella are amazing!! Smart non-biased Pod
I’m a 48-year-old boston born, college educated, physician assistant who was a firefighter paramedic, grew up in a very Irish Catholic home and would describe myself as a AGN cross-dresser growing up. (Thank You Ray Blanchard for demystifying that term and removing its stigma, that episode was awesome 🙏) I’ve struggled with masculinity, my inner feminity my whole life. I currently am back in therapy but your honest, non-biased discussions and interviews have literally been a lifesaver. I have managed my own distress tolerance my entire life and have been nothing but professionally successful as well as in a loving marriage to my best friend who is very much a supportive ally. Thank you both for going beyond today’s unintelligent narrative that pushes medicalization and basically on one hand advocates the grey of nonbinary but pushes the money driven medical interventions which is in effect ‘The Binary’. Helen Joyce’s book was groundbreaking as I consider myself a feminist (my wife is my hero) and the narrative out there gets pushed too far without proper intelligent compromise and nuance. You both have helped me live my best gender queer life, come out at work and still be the rockstar healthcare provider that I am and better human without jumping into changes to my body (HRT) that I may not necessarily be able to reverse. There is a space for men like me who just feel feminine, enjoy dressing as such but aren’t willing to blow up their whole life just for an image. I have found friends & Allie’s emerging from the closet just being ME, it’s extremely liberating and the smart insight you both provide with this podcast is truly a public service to all of us who’ve struggled. I know I’m not alone as I’ve recommended this pod to several friends who share my experience. Thank you both so very much for doing what you do! 🙏 Barry (“KB” / Krystal) Canavan, PA-C

Producer has been designated as a anti-trans hate group by the SPLC
Gender: A Wider Lens, is a series by Genspect / SEGM. Genspect / SEGM are anti-trans advocacy groups that have been designated as anti-LGBTQ+ hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center. In a major move, the Southern Poverty Law Center has formally designated the anti-transgender pseudoscience organizations Genspect and the Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine as anti-LGBTQ+ hate groups. This designation is part of the civil rights organization’s latest release of its “Year In Hate & Extremism” report, which tracks hate groups and extremist groups throughout the United States. Members of these and other anti-LGBTQ+ organizations listed have played significant roles in the passage of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and policy by concealing and underplaying their ties to anti-LGBTQ+ extremism. Most recently, members of the newly designated hate group, Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine, helped advise the Cass Review in the United Kingdom, which has led to the criminalization of possession of some forms of transgender care there and is currently being used to argue for heavy restrictions in the United States.

    Grateful
So grateful to find a place where people are exploring this complicated and sensitive issue in a kind and respectful manner. I’ve learned a lot by listening. As a therapist I have found it difficult to talk about this topic with colleagues and in other “safe spaces” without the fear of being viewed as unsupportive. So this podcast is refreshing and a wonderful resource. Somehow we have been conditioned to think that by talking about this topic and reflecting on it we are causing harm. Sasha & Stella remind us we can be kind, curious and be critical thinkers. We’ve got to ask the tough questions of ourselves and society, our children deserve it and depend on us. I am so thankful that Sasha & Stella are here to guide us in the conversations.

    Thank you
I don’t feel so alone and I wish I found you earlier. I am reminded by your podcasts of finding my authoritative and authentic voice in parenting my young adult gender non conforming daughter from a distance. I love her so much.

Please return to making all content free and accessible
I’ve appreciated the fairly-balanced nature of this podcast, even if the hosts at times seem overly hetero-/upper-middle-class in their perspectives. What’s most disappointing though is the recent turn toward monetizing content. If you’re truly trying to help people understand the importance of these issues, why on earth hide any content behind a paywall? Not keeping this a free, educational resource for ALL who need it, not just for people who can afford it, makes me question the motives of those involved.

An Invaluable Resource on Gender - A True Public Good
These two psychotherapists have taken their own questions - which are really all of our questions - and taken them up in this podcast, respectfully and boldly. The scientists, academics, and other knowledgeable and notable guests they have on the show are more informative and, taken as a collection, more comprehensive than anything in the mainstream media. They always look at the many vantage points of a topic - not surprising because that is what professional therapists *do*. When you do good work, you become a leader. These two women are now *the* great leaders in the dialogue on [western] gender concepts.

    TERRIBLE TRANSPHOBIA
this podcast was extremely upsetting as a non-binary person. i came across their episode on non-binary ness and it was horrific, full of misinformation and the whole thing was one big invalidation of the identity. for the love of god don’t listen to these randoms

    Just what I needed!
I’m a mom of a trans identified teen. I’ve been completely overwhelmed by this issue and unsure how to find quality information. This podcast has been extremely helpful.

Excellent, should not be behind paywall
This is excellent content that needs to be shared. Thoughtful and empathetic analyses. This is not, however, unique or specialized enough to warrant a paywall. Your keeping information from people who truly need it, and who have influence enough to use it to help young people. The people who could benefit the most from this information are newer to the topic and not invested (yet!) enough to pay for it. I believe you both should be compensated for your quality efforts, but please consider another approach to supporting your work.

    “Unbiased”
Read the Glinner episode description and tell me how it isn’t written in a way that’s biased against trans people. Also, ROGD isn’t real and you guys are spreading harmful misinformation

Amazing that more people having conversations like these aren’t out there
These are conversations that absolutely need to be had, and in having them, the hosts and guests are doing the very difficult work that so few are willing to do. These are the kinds of arguments (for and against affirmation) that could quite conceivably save lives. Thank you to the hosts, and to all the guests who are willing to risk so much for the sake of freedom of expression, sanity in our most celebrated institutions, and liberalism and conservatism alike.

Now one of my favorite podcasts
Sasha and Stella, I look forward to your podcast every week! This topic is just so interesting, and I love all of the deep questions you ask and the guests you invite to explore it more deeply. Also, I love the supportive, humble and humorous way in which you talk to each other and find that I am starting to adopt the same manner in group discussions of my own because it is so effective in getting group members to feel heard by each other and to be open to new ideas. Thanks so much for being out there!!

A must listen for concerned parents and caregivers
A refreshingly nuanced, evidence-based podcast. I find myself taking notes and making lists during every episode. Hosts are insightful, careful, and compassionate.

    No voices from trans people
I think discussions about trans people need to include trans people. Putting the techniques described here into practice can be extremely damaging.

Good podcast except for poor audio by 1 contributor
Really enjoy this podcast with Stella and Sasha covering a wide variety of topics within the broad topic or transgenderism and trans ideology. Would easily rate this show 5 stars except for Sasha’s audio setup. While Stella sounds natural as if she’s in the same room with the listener, Sasha’s audio is always full of echo as if she is podcasting from a high ceilinged room with exposed wood framing, no insulation and a less than professional microphone setup. It is so distracting and jarring that it is only through sheer interest in the topics they are covering that I continue to listen on, hoping someday this message gets through and Sasha fixes her audio setup. If that were fixed this would be a five star listen for me.

It’s been said before…but this is the thinking person’s take on gender
Truly honest, balanced and thoughtful. Some episodes could use a little editing but it is glorious to hear these two professionals at the height of their powers talk with such compassion and insight into what is perhaps the issue of our times.

    Smart & thoughtful
Stella and Sasha are the best guides through these confusing times. I have been going through the back catalog listening to older episodes - there are some fascinating conversations, especially with Maya Forstatter, the clinicians who pioneered the Dutch protocol, and the interviews with Dr. Michael Bailey. Thank you for making this much needed podcast!

Two intelligent, compassionate, open-minded, light-hearted hosts. Expert guests. Professional producers. Fascinating topics. One of the best podcasts ever.

    Informed Consent
I love your podcast. You ask important and compelling questions, and you are genuinely interested in the answers. A true spirit of inquiry. Here is a topic I would like to see addressed: informed consent. I recently listened to an episode of the Dark Horse podcast which explored the salience of the Nuremberg Code — which established the fundamental principle of informed consent in medicine — for Covid policies. But I would appreciate a similar exploration of this topic, perhaps with a medical ethicist, regarding transgender medicine. But not just with respect to youth. There has been considerable emphasis on youth transition because it is understood by many that they cannot consent. But I don’t think this should be the end of the discussion. How does informed consent apply to adults? Is it being applied correctly? Are MDs following their oath to Do No Harm? Yours is the podcast best suited to address this vital concern.

    Great for lay people!
I was introduced to this podcast via the interview with Helen Joyce (absolutely brilliant woman!!!). I’m a lay person interested in the trans epidemic as I call it. I came to this area via interest in the satanic panic, believe the children, repressed memories movement etc. This trans epidemic is so similar to those previous hysterias I cannot believe more people can’t see it. Anyway, this podcast is very explanatory and easy for the general audience without a psych or gender studies degree to consume and enjoy. Absolutely fascinating stuff. I’m 100% positive 20 years from now these two brilliant women will be interviewed by some grad student historian asking “how were you able to see that this was nonsense when your colleagues were gobbling it up?” Any time a group of people refuse debate be wary!

    Very thoughtful and loving
This podcast approaches the topic of gender in a very thoughtful and loving way. They are sincere and caring in their views and very thorough in their exploration of how our society, the educational system, and the medical field treats this issue. They have given me hope that we will all figure this out and settle in a place where we can truly be helpful and loving to all our gender variant children and adults.

    Exactly What We Need
In the seemingly insane battle between “activists” and “terfs,” Sasha and Stella bring exactly what is needed to the debate – intelligence, curiosity, experience, courage, thoughtfulness, and oodles of compassion all around. I’ve just finished listening to every single episode, and I couldn’t feel more respect and admiration for these two. This really is the thinking person’s take on gender. I hope their bravery will be contagious.

    Superb
Found these two on YouTube first and quickly started to binge watch their videos. Such an informative and kind approach to a very difficult issue. The negative reviews are expected of course, the rigid ideology that trans activists follow does not allow room for any sort of questioning or critique- It’s either affirm or bust. Critical minds knows nothing is that simple of course. A big thank you to the show hosts for all their efforts.

    Ignores anti-trans violence
This podcast is interesting, but it’s very (perhaps overly) clinical and too often limited to middle and upper class experiences with gender. I’m not opposed to folks exploring views that conflict with lefty trans activism, but I do feel this pod is fairly Eurocentric and broadly ignores the everyday experiences of trans / gender nonconforming folks growing up in unsupportive circumstances. Just take the US as an example, which is more violent and more conservative and religious than Europe and Canada. People own guns. Feminine males and masculine females are disproportionately the victims of hate crimes (just google O’shae sibley). As a result, medicalization and the ability to “pass” as the opposite sex can end up being a matter of survival for many. The violence and marginalization faced by gender nonconforming and trans folks in many communities is an urgent and critical issue, yet is seldom discussed on this pod. If you are going to argue against medicalization, then you need to confront the extreme bias that continues to exist against folks who identify outside the gender binary. Instead, all too often, this pod dedicates entire episodes to weird outlier examples of trans acceptance allegedly going too far - thinking of their most recent episode about a tiny private school in upstate New York. This type of case study is just not at all representative of so so many trans and lgbtq experiences.

    TRANSPHOBIA ALERT
I urge listeners to follow your instincts. If this podcast makes you cringe, is for a reason. NOT GENDER AFFIRMATIVE AT ALL.
  • serioussceptic
    Please listen to this podcast!!
I love the content and thoughtful examination of this very central and nuanced topic. To the creators; Please amend the phrase “the thinking persons…” I think it sound’s off putting if I were to try and share with someone who hasn’t yet reached the same conclusions.

    Calm and thoughtful

One of the best resources out there
Such thoughtful, well-reasoned, and compassionate take from two very intelligent women. This is a fantastic resource for anyone who has a transgender or gender-questioning person in their life.

    Informative, humane, nuanced
Thank you for shedding light on the ideological gender stranglehold, despite the good intentions by some, that is setting back gains that gay people and women have made over the past few decades. I am grateful for your courage, I’m sure you’re getting blowback as some of the 1-star non-reviews here suggest.
  • P3rson134
    Transphobia
Just from the descriptions it looks like this podcast tries to put an [pseudo] intellectual venere on their transphobic ideology. Pretending to come “from all sides” but mostly promoting the anti-trans side.
  • carbonbasedcait
    Amazing and insightful
My only complaint is I wish some of the interviews were longer!

    From all sides.
I am a Christian conservative, political broadcaster. I needed to know more about this topic so I could talk about it thoughtfully. I found your podcast because someone recommended it to me and I listen to it every week. I may not always agree, but I always learn something.

    Helpful for Parents
Thank you so much. I don’t have a gender questioning child but I am the parent of 4 gen z young people. I am learning so much from you both on how to help my kids. My kids do have trans and non conforming friends and I have two children who are active in the LGBTQ community.
  • "joe listener"
    So far so good
Wow. Oxygen and light pouring in in a topic area where we there is no space for growth and evolution. I have needed space to think my thoughts and feel my feels and I have only found politicos and belligerents and thought police on both sides, until now… There is real thinking happening here and eager to start exploring more.
  • sdffghuuhbhgv1234556
    My question
Here’s my question for the hosts: Can you tell me your unconscious reasons for your gender? You seem very invested in your “curiosity” about the unconscious reasons “why” trans and non-binary people express themselves. So, please, tell me your process for becoming the gender that you are! I’m sure you’ve done years of work and psychoanalysis solely on this topic, right? So, please, let your listeners in. You want to ask trans people “why, why, why?” So, please answer that question for us! Tell us WHY you’re women! You must know since this is what you expect trans people to explain to you.
