The Vela

Drama #136

A refugee returns to her home planet in search of a missing ship that holds the key to saving humanity. As her planet’s star dies, Asala Sikou doesn’t have much hope for the future of civilization. She’s already survived disaster once and is pretty sure she won’t make it a second time. But when she is given a top-secret mission to find a missing ship the government believes was last seen on her former, dead planet, Asala dares to hope that maybe someone from her family survived. This is no ordinary rescue mission: the missing ship may be the last piece in a complex puzzle designed to bring salvation to the failing galaxies. And Asala isn’t the only one trying to find it. A crumbling solar system. A daring space mission. A harrowing journey of survival. The Vela returns with a breathtaking sequel that will shake you to your core in The Vela: Salvation. The Vela is a Realm production. Season 1 is written by Yoon Ha Lee, Becky Chambers, SL Huang, and Rivers Solomon. Season 2 is written by Ashley Poston, Maura Milan, Nicole Givens Kurtz, and Sangu Mandanna. Great story
I love this series, I would be remiss if I didn’t say, I cannot believe the amount of ad spots.

    Another “modern” miss
Full of current political tropes. The “fantasy” of these stories is supposed to be in the settings not the poorly written characters.

Excellent story with an excellent natrator
More audio book than podcast, The Vela has all the trappings of space opera—a galaxy-spanning threat, a conflicted protagonist with complicated loyalties, despotic rulers, and a MacGuffin that changes everything. However, all these elements come together beautifully across the series. As someone who has long been a fan of sci fi, it’s rare to find such a competent and well-executed story in the genre. The writing is engaging and lean, with few scenes that don’t drive the plot forward. Robin Miles is a phenomenal narrator, and she brings life to the characters with clarity and skill. My only critique is that there are places I wish the sound effects had been a bit more nuanced and that there had been some music to help vary the pacing of the story. Miles’ narration is excellent, but some of the more intense sequences slow down due to being delivered at the same pace as the slower sections. For an audiobook, it is excellent. For a podcast, I would have loved to hear more variety. That being said, I still heavily recommend the show and it is well worth a listen.

    The Vela
The Vela is an extraordinary rollercoaster ride of adventure and emotion filled with unexpected events and genuinely human characters and relationships, all brought to life with great sound design and the narration art of Robin Miles. It should not be missed!

    Extremely well-done and inclusive
I really enjoyed it the story and voice acting! As silly as it may sound, I enjoyed the non-binary character and found it helpful to hear non-gendered pronoun use for adapting into real life.

    Stick through the beginning
I had a little trouble following this podcast in the first 15 min or so? But it starts to really come together! Really great!

    Woke garbage
Calling a single person “they” is improper English and annoying to attempt to follow.

    Great and engaging podcast
I loved every minute of The Vela. Asala is a competing character and Nico is worthy sidekick/partner. The narrator draws you into the world, helping you visualize the various settlements and the characters’ connection to them. You are inspired by Asala and Nico’s bravery and desire to do the right thing, even at great cost. A story and narration. Get into it!

    Great podcast.
About to finish season 1 and am hooked. It is nice that I can listen to the whole first season for free then catch up when I get there. Good carectors and good voice acting.

    Hmm
Can’t like it if I can’t listen to it. Definitely not paying just to hear the first episode to see if it’s interesting. Maybe additional ones later but there’s zero chance I’m paying for anything unless I know it’s worth it. Why would anyone intentionally limit their audience like that? Of course S2E1 is available…because everyone likes picking up a story half way thru.

    Season 2 Ep2 big
What’s up with there only being ten minutes of Ssn2 ep2? Apple podcast doesn’t have the whole episode available.

    Love the show, but...
Love the show, but you drive me insane with how you talk about niko. You make it sound as if he is two people in one or something, hard to ignore.

    Love love love
Didn't know I’ve been waiting for the Vela until it filled the sci-fi hole in my heart. Also, the cover art is amazing

    Where are The episodes
I signed up for this podcast as a reference from another podcast and nothing is happening. Basically the trailer dropped but where is the actual podcast I’ve been waiting for sometime now. Are you ever going to release any episodes?

    Immediately Hooked!
The show tackles lots of current events but in an entertaining and thrilling way. Glad I found The Vela!

    Robin Miles is everything
This is a really cool sci-fi story and Robin Miles brings the same brilliant narration from the broken earth series. This story is definitely for fans of sci-fi who don’t see themselves in Captain Kirk and Luke skywalker.
  • sko1983
    Episode 4 is missing
There seems to be some kind of glitch? Episode 4 is missing so I’m stuck. Otherwise one of Realm’s better stories.
