Parenting #210

Your child is autistic, now what? Parenting a child is often rewarding, but for parents of autistic children, it can be a struggle when communication, finances, or behavior is a barrier. Join hosts Lia & Matt McCabe, an Autistic & ADHD couple raising two autistic daughters and the founders of the charity project AutismWish, in weekly discussions to provide parents with guidance, tips, resources, and a newfound perspective on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Each week we will share our experience raising special needs children and tackle difficult or taboo subjects in the Autism world with encouragement and guidance on how to broaden your perspective while learning to understand and empathize with your autistic child, from weathering the storm to Embracing Autism. Wonderful information and honest talk
This has been such a great source of information from a couple that is easy to listen to. They break down some of the key things that I didn’t understand as i was starting to understand my child's diagnosis. I am very glad I found this podcast.

    Misinformation
I fully appreciate this is based on your experience. But there are some serious red flags of disinformation and I just had to unsubscribe. The last one that just did me in was the claim that it was only recently that doctors were aware that girls could have autism. No. Very wrong. It is true that girls are mis or under diagnosed due to errors in interpreting behaviors and social filters applied by ignorant staff. But there is a long history of girls being diagnosed. I would find it better to receive your insights from your experience without the medical conclusions that could mislead parents beginning their journey.

    Good quality information!!
I love how Lia and Matt break down autism in children and help us parents understand the ins and outs of embracing autism. They are a down-to-earth couple and amazing resources. I’ll definitely come here when I need advice or encouragement.

    First episode-
I’m only on the the first episode and I’m in tears…..when he says he had to have a talk with family about his child possibly NOT growing out of these behaviors and it may be a struggle!!!! That right there is the hardest part. It’s been a struggle to talk with family and tell them information without them trying to ‘fix’ the situation instead of just supporting us. Thank you for sharing and being so open!! ❤️❤️❤️

    Simply wonderful!
As a mom of two NT girls and a NV ASD son, it is so refreshing to finally feel like I am not alone. This is such an isolating diagnosis for a parent and I have felt so alone since he was diagnosed in October of 2018 when he was 2. I was overwhelmed. Thank you thank you.

    We enjoy it!
This podcast has been great to listen to. It’s nice getting both perspectives from a mom & dad. It’s nice listening to people who get it & I’ve enjoyed learning some new things on the way with my own two who are on the spectrum. This was the podcast I was missing from my life & I’m so glad it here!

    Will recommend to all!
How refreshing to hear parents share their journey through ASD who actually understand their children and what they are going through! I love that they have devoted their lives to not only helping their children navigate this world but helping others with their families through Autism Wish. Very knowledgeable couple whose passion is greatly appreciated by all of us who live in an ASD world everyday. I will definitely be recommending this podcast to my friends and family! Thank you both for your hard work and dedication!

Insights from Two Parents’ Ongoing Journey
This podcast offers an honest and compelling exploration of parenthood with neurodivergent children and of the neurodiverse family unit as a whole. It provides a practical resource for the neurotypical to develop a better understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder and how to better support neurodivergent friends and family in the community. These talks seem like an especially useful tool for parents and for people like myself who are looking for advice into how to navigate and improve relationships with individuals and families with autism. Looking forward future episodes packed with insights from this couple’s humble journey through parenthood.

    Great podcast!
This podcast came just at the right moment for me. I'm new to the world of autism and this podcast virtually holds your hand through the process from the very beginning where you're just noticing red flags and through diagnosis. I'm excited to see what comes next as I'm already learning so much!

Love hearing from a neurodiverse parent’s perspective!
There aren’t a lot of podcasts out there on autism, let alone many where you hear from both the perspective of the mother AND the father! I love that it’s a casual discussion based format with both parents and also gives insight into neurodiversity in general! The hosts are neurodiverse so it gives a unique lens into the subject matter. I also appreciate that they keep their kids names anonymous and don’t focus solely on themselves, the focus really seems to be on the kids and autism in general and focuses on optimism, self-development and a growth mindset rather than feeling sorry for oneself or staying in a hopeless state of mind. They truly do Embrace Autism. A great fresh perspective!
