OBSESSIONS: Wild Chocolate

172

Forget Willy Wonka and those heart-shaped Valentine’s boxes. OBSESSIONS: Wild Chocolate. is a totally different beast. Join host Rowan Jacobson as he elbows his way through the rain forest, crash lands into cocaine flyaways, and avoids a few too many anaconda, tagging along with modern-day Lara Crofts as they try to get their hands on some of the world’s most ancient– and expensive– cacao.

    I want more…
…of this pod and amazing chocolate! What happened to the Stettler Chocolate link?! I’d love to couple recommending this series with a gift pack of chocolate for my close friends! (And I want some for me, too!) I loved the storytelling, dynamic audio landscape, and the people. What a great idea; and so well executed. Thank you.

    Very well done
A+ chocolate content, maybe the best chocolate content available honestly.

    Favorite Podcast!
This podcast has everything: adventure, history, botany, environmentalism, anthropology, revenge, inspiration, etc. Would love another season to hear about newer developments, updates, or other regions of the world.

Very interesting listen, and I’m intrigued, but your link doesn’t work!
I was fascinated the entire time, up to the point that I wanted to order the chocolate to try, but your link doesn’t work. So disappointed!

    Wow
The hosts voice is one of most nasally, congested sounding noises I have ever had the displeasure of listening to. Like nails on chalkboard, I couldn’t stop listening sooner. Disappointing because it seemed like an interesting story but holy smokes that vocal fry… it was actually quite violating to my ears.

    Question
Isn’t Willy Wonka’s whole thing that he travels to find rare and exquisite chocolate?

    Adventure and chocolate!
Educational and entertaining! I felt as though I was in the Amazon hunting for wild Cacao myself. I learned so much about the people who inhabit this magical space and the dangers faced just living in the Amazon.

    Riveting! Informative! Fascinating!
I'm learning way too much about chocolate, and having a blast in the Amazon while doing so! The production values of this podcast are absolutely amazing, though at times it almost feels like a long-format commercial for their chocolate. (Which of course I'm going to buy.)

    Great Podcat
This is a great podcast. I learned a lot and I really enjoyed the story. Although, I’m not sure why the link to buy the chocolate they discuss brings you to a list of tennis shoes!

This is a thoroughly enjoyable story about my favorite treat, and I learned so much.

    Worth a relisten
This in depth exploration of chocolate and the bean to bar industry is extraordinary. As a business owner, it’s a wonderful education. As a chocolate lover, it has been looking more carefully at the “fair trade” chocolate I usually buy. As someone who has been known to inhale a box of cookies in one sitting, listening to this podcast has zero calories, so I can enjoy chocolate without gaining weight. I’ve relistened to this series twice now.

    Chocoholics Unite
Not sure how I stumbled on this podcast, but upon listening was immediately immersed into the Amazon rainforest. Captivating storyline telling the intriguing dark history of chocolate and the current efforts for a better future. As a chocolate lover myself, I was surprised to learn how most cocoa is harvested and fermented and sold with no way to trace the origins of the beans. Made me want to join Abram’s crusade, and I purchased 2 boxes of her chocolate in support. Used the boxes for a high quality chocolate tasting experience for my dad’s birthday and the chocolate absolutely did not disappoint! Smooth and decadent 1000/10 :) thank you kaleidoscope!!!

    Chocoholic Approved
This is a fascinating podcast for anyone, but more so for someone that adores chocolate. It’s amazing to learn where chocolate really comes from and the dark underbelly world of trading chocolate. If you love true crime/documentary/educational type or podcasts, then this one is for you.

I really appreciate the massive effort it must’ve taken to put these episodes together! Having read Rowen’s articles, and the book Essential Oyster, I knew this new adventure would be outstanding. I have begun my own exploration of cacao when I pivoted from working as a chef to now focusing on making chocolate from scratch and from some of these same exotic sources. Can’t wait to discover more!

Added love to my love of chocolate
Chocolate will now have added layers of meaning after listening to this fascinating tale. Great pace, interesting characters, and the perfect auditive environment to enjoy hours of inmersive storytelling. Bravo!

    Cacao Drinker Here
Loved this show and I would love to hear a second season about drinking cacao and how that has blown up in the spiritual world. That would be equally as good!

    Fascinating!!
I love everything about this show! I had no idea that Caputos had won a chocolate award and I live in Salt Lake City. The host is charming and his interviews bring us into the rainforest with him. Of course I’m buying the chocolate box and can’t wait to get it! I don’t work for the podcast - I just really love this show!!

    Fascinating storytelling
This is some of the finest creative nonfiction writing I have encountered in ages and the podcast format is perfectly suited to it. I was hooked from the first few minutes of episode one and thoroughly enjoyed every second of every episode thereafter. Wonderful job by all who touched this project. I’m considering buying the chocolate and listening again to savor both experiences together. Thanks for this one!!

    Excellent, engaging storytelling
If you’re at all drawn in by the subject matter, it’s well worth a listen. The fascinating world of wild chocolate has me hooked! Terrific writing and narration by Rowan Jacobsen.

The chocolate accompanying this podcast is unreal! Totally worth it

    Wild ride
This is crazy good! After my usual mix of discussions or interviews on podcasts, feel like I have stumbled on a new genre. It is a history lesson about cacao told as a wildly entertaining adventure story. Love the mix of voices, the storytelling and the subtle but atmospheric sound. It is about as perfect as a podcast gets. Been ecommending it to all my fellow podcast listeners.

    Fun adventure chocolate hunting!
It’s like an anthropological study of cacao and South American culture combined with a fun adventure story going through the Amazon. Highly recommend!

    Obsessions: Wild chocolate
Who would have known that chocolate could be wild? Loved the writing, narration and production of this Indiana Jones style story. And it's true to boot! Made me see chocolate in a whole new light. Podcasts are tough for me to get through without fast forwarding but this one has me riveted! Do make more!
  • timjcrow
Indiana Jones meets spiritual traveler adventures.
Highly entertaining romp through the rainforest in search of wild chocolate. Had no idea such a thing even existed, but totally resonates that truly wild chocolate can have transcendental properties that local people place in a similar category to the healing properties of forest medicines. Looking forward to the next episode!

    Now I’m hooked
I wasn’t expecting the wild ride that this show already has me on. If I wasn’t already hooked, this third episode has me wanting next Wednesday to come around faster! Such an interesting, clever, adventurous, and quirky exploration into a food we all know and love.
  • NIKHDEE
    Great story!
Interesting indeed! Kept me engaged through the episode!

Fascinating story telling with facts about chocolates!
Must admit, first full podcast I have listened to without fast forwarding. Fascinating story telling filled with interesting facts about wild chocolate and life in Amazon! Now I want to visit the place myself and yeah I also want to go and get some wild chocolate.
  • xyzq7
    Rich experience
Awesome podcast! It has adventure, humor, food, and interesting facts. And what adventure story also leaves your mouth watering? Can’t wait for the rest (and some of that chocolate)!

    A Wild Ride!
I’m loving this podcast so far! The host has a great “radio voice” and the first episode had me on the edge of my seat. How can chocolate (basically my favorite food) be so exciting? Listen and find out! Seriously, I already knew a little about cultivated chocolate in West Africa but nothing about wild chocolate in South America, and I’m hooked!!
  • mangeshsuperfan
    Captivating and Fun!
I absolutely loved the first episode of Wild Chocolate! It was like Fitzcarraldo meets Indiana Jones and Amelie…a suspenseful, funny adventure!
