Heretic in the House

Judaism #36

America has a fascination with Hasidic Jews; they show up frequently in memoirs, in newspapers, and even on Netflix. But these popular depictions don’t tell the whole story; they just tell the story the public wants to hear. What they hide is a complicated dance between Orthodox Judaism and those who leave the community, and a web of stereotypes that trap Hassidim, rebels, and the public alike. In this limited four-part series, Professor Naomi Seidman takes us on a deeply moving journey with believers and heretics alike to uncover their hidden stories.Heretic in the House is a podcast from the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America. It's written by Naomi Seidman and produced by M. Louis Gordon. David Zvi Kalman is our senior producer. It is mixed by Cory Choy at Silver Sound NYC with theme music from Luke Allen.

    So smart, so good
This was a fascinating series with a really important perspective on the OTD community and the way the rest of the Jewish community (and world) relates to them and their stories.

    Deeply insightful
A deeply insightful look at the narratives that are told about those who have gone off the derech (otd), i.e. left the fold. The host’s passionate point of view as an otd person shines through without limiting the podcast from empathizing with Orthodox society and from seeking an understanding of things that goes beyond the often reductive narratives held by Orthodox society, the “outside world,” and even otd people themselves.

    Fascinating
I’ve always been interested in people who have left closed communities, and, especially Hasidim as I was raised Jewish, Modern orthodox. Very thoughtful, insightful discussion on the complexities from both sides.

    Outstanding
Naomi articulates beautifully things, thoughts and experiences of the OTD community I have often struggled to articulate myself. Thank you.

    Fantastic
As someone who experienced many of the issues Naomi Seidman explores, I can attest that she’s spot on in her observations, and does so in a deep, concise and highly intelligent manner. There’s a lot that is contained in these somewhat short episodes. Highly recommended.

    Listen to it today!
Naomi Seidman is an accomplished professor, but that doesn’t mean she’s overly immersed in academic language or impenetrable semantics. “Heretic In the House” creates a human connection between the listener and the many Jews interviewed to paint a picture of the community. Regardless of your faith and culture, it’s a fascinating listen, both sad, funny, discouraging, and hopeful.
