I love the podcast. Ive probably listened to it 5x so far. I am finding this time around is a little different. I would have liked to donate some money to the production…except for the new advertising that has been tacked on to the front and end of the episodes. Please make the advertising louder. It is not making it into my stubborn brain at 1.5x louder than the podcast. If you turned it up to eleven you could make my ears bleed like you are making my brain bleed. -a huge Rome podcast fan. P.S. Your comments about audible and advertising didn’t age well Mr. Duncan. Maybe if you threw a commercial over that bit of audio it would help too.

Content is excellent. Ads are necessary on free content, but choosing a service that serves quieter ones would go a long way. They are disruptive and very irritating. Pacing is faster than I like but tolerable once the I adjusted to it. At least a few second pause between passages would make a difference though. Overall quality improves a good amount over the course of the podcast but still feels a bit unpolished well into the running.

It pains me to give this one star. I have listened to THOR for many years. Duncan is still great. The content is still fabulous. The ads that have been added are decibels louder and jolt me from sleep. I would pay for a subscription if it were available.

I use to love listening to The History of Rome to fall a sleep. I can’t do that anymore because of the stupid ads which are loud and wake me up. I am really upset about this.

I used to love listening and re-listening to this podcast, but the ads really make it unenjoyable. Not only are they loud and don’t match the volume of the podcast, but now many of the episodes cut off early, often in the middle of a sentence. This makes it really difficult to engage with the content. I understand the need for profitability, but if you want to attract new listeners to your brand/content, History of Rome needs to be the incredible product it used to be.

I still love every minute of my yearly listen for over ten years !?!?!?!? Now there’s ads???? I’m not listening to your ads I’d rather just listen to Gibbon every year at least he didn’t come back years later and add ads to his books

With the ads that have been added to old episodes this is no longer listenable. Ads are way too loud and episodes get cut off. What a shame.

Don’t get me wrong I love the podcast and every second of it is worth listening, but the main reason I chose this podcast over many others is that it was ad-free, but with it no longer being like that i’d rather look for another podcast.

Mike Duncan is a pleasure to listen to. The first few episodes might be wanting for more audio polish, but he soon finds his ideal equipment and rhythm (about the time of the republic). Great details, insights, and research in each episode. An absolute must listen for any fan of ancient Rome.

Love the podcast listen every night

I love this podcast however the constant mispronunciations get to be funny after a bit. Basically however Mike pronounces something before he gets corrected is wrong. It’s actually semi-hilarious. Fun cast.

I loved this podcast i am fifteen years old and do track and field i love the history of rome and have just finished the hole series i learned so much and the aspects of roman life and honor will guide me through my life thx mike i loved this podcast and have learned so much from the concurring of the celtic home of the poe valley to the seige of Jerusalem all the way to battling the huns i loved this podcast and others will too senatus populus que romanus

This has been one of my favorite podcasts. Mike Duncan is very easy to listen to and is a great narrator. Between his witty clips and his smooth baritone voice, I could listen to history of the Roman Empire every day. Still, I am glad that he did. Quality over quantity. Some of the early episode episodes are a little hard to listen to because they’re a little quiet, but other than that, I think this is one of the best podcasts out there.

I walk every day and listen to lots of podcasts. The History of Rome has been one of the best I have ever heard. Well done. Both informative and entertaining.

History of Rome is great and fun

Hello, i have been a huge fan of this podcast for a while, and i have just started reading your book “the storm before the storm”. Its a good book

The young ones are not easy to keep engaged, especially when it comes to this subject matter, but they were more than engaged in this podcast. They can't stop listening and I have to stop them from listening too much. The best!!

I am a history devotee and published nonfiction author on the American Civil War. I have won two national book awards. Mike Duncan’s podcast and William Shearer’s epic Rise and Fall of the Third Reich are the best scholarly works I have ever indulged. Congratulations and thanks Mr. Duncan. I aspire for any of my future projects to approach yours in quality and presentation.

So many podcasts today are so commercial, with famous or semi famous celebrities pontificating. This podcast is what podcasts are supposed to be. One guy doing his best to educate and entertain. Yes he makes a bit of money but his dedication to the show shines through. Well done.

Thanks Mr Duncan for The History of Rome podcast series first and foremost. I am currently listening to the entire series for the 4th time around in it’s entirety and almost each time I catch something I either missed or forgot while listening. To say that I absolutely love this series is a mild statement. The only other lengthy series I have ever been obsessed with before The History of Rome podcast was the American Civil War documentary series directed by Ken Burns

I recommend that the narrator vary his voice, adding some dynamics. Make more conversational and less just performing a dry read. The content is interesting and well researched.

Love this show, I push mow my lawn and literally listen to this show the entire time every time I do it. So this is like my 4th listen through in a decade. Great show. Going to revolutions next & got his books. Great job Mike!

Most history is told in a cursory manner to keep it exciting, telling only the big picture events, but leaving out meaningful details. Historians tend to include all the details which makes history a slog. The History of Rome gets it right. Details that fill you with the world of Rome, but not so many that you get bogged down. Excellent series.

This is the second time I’m listening to this podcast. It is amazing and more than a little concerning how the end of the Roman Republic leading up to the Caesars is more than a little similar to the US since the fall of the Soviet Union.

I’m not even done with my first listen and I already know I want to listen through again. It’s so good and so thorough. I’d love a book version to read and highlight.

Listened to this series through and through for the 3rd time now. Enjoyable and well developed. Plus a lot of enjoyable factoids!

Always a favorite to listen to. Genuinely great material and a fascinating delivery.

Excellent podcast. I think in one of the episodes Mike made a recommendation for kids on the history of Rome. I don’t remember which episode or his recommendation. Does anyone know which episode that was?

I was going to write a review after I was done listening but I couldn’t wait. I just wanted to say thank you for making this outstanding work. I was in Rome in April of 2023 and I had a blast listening to you and discovering the ancient city I love so much. In a couple of months I’m going back to Rome and I’ll listen to the last episode when I land in the eternal city. I’ll remember it forever.

Greatest podcast in the history of man.

It’s great for listening to while I try to settle down to sleep, while I do chores and cleaning around the house, or while eating. I can’t get enough of it, it’s very interesting for someone who is a history nerd like me!

when i was a baby my older teenage brother found this podcast and started to listen to it every night and when he would put me to bed thought it the perfect time to listen to his new favorite podcast . i would listen to it just about every night and as i got older i started to love history, my love for history only grew when i started to watch channels like Kings and Genarals and i really loved the steady but firm narration from both mike duncan and the narrators for kings and genarals. so i really would recommend this podcast to anyone who is interested in history or is just wanting to find somthing good to listen to.

The History of Rome is the benchmark. Often imitated never duplicated, the episodes are the perfect length, narration is honest, and this show has led me down several other historical rabbit holes! Start or restart the series now!

Listened to this podcast 10 times over and still listening. One of the greatest ever

There’s no other way to put it- this is the best Roman History Podcast out there. Mike Duncan is up there with Dan Carlin and Tom Holland and other history podcast GOATs.

An excellent podcast. Mike summarizes all the endless high points and keeps moving through without ever getting bogged down. Roman civilization is a long and great story, this podcast covers it perfectly.

Nicely done — I listened to it all the way through. And maybe one day, I’ll do a repeat!

Loved it, especially how you merged entertaining puns with great history content

Audio quality (esp volume) leaves a lot to be desired, but other than that it’s really good! The narrator has a nice voice, and the content is broad, but with enough details when zooming in on specific events. It’s a really good balance.
