PSYC 101: General Psychology (DSM-5 Edition)

11

This General Psychology collection is an update of a previous collection and it contains discussions of mental health issues that are based on the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) published by the American Psychiatric Association in May 2013.

This course collection is intended to provide an examination and application of major principles of psychology including: an introduction to scientific and research methods, biological foundations, sensation and perception, learning and conditioning, human development, motivation and emotion, thinking, memory and intelligence, personality theories, stress and coping, social psychology, psychological disorders and their treatment.

The podcasts presented in this series will include live class recordings of lecture presentations and additional pre-recorded segments that focus on frequently asked questions and concepts that often provide a challenge for many students. These materials are intended to supplement the traditional classroom approach of my courses and to enhance students’ learning experiences.

Target audience should include current and future students and others who wish to know more about the topic areas. The materials are not intended to be textbook specific so that they can be useful to others. For HACC students, the purpose is to allow an opportunity to review or catch up on lectures/class periods that may have been missed or misunderstood.

For other learners outside of HACC, the purpose is to supply another resource for their learning that is both entertaining and educational. The lectures were originally recorded during the Fall Semester 2020 with some updates as necessary.

Please send any suggestions/feedback to drbailey@hacc.edu. I hope you enjoy listening and thanks for exploring the world of psychology with me.

    Excellent as YouTube
“Biopsychology Chapter 3 (part 2 of 3)” -high academic level - similar to the University of Bristol YouTube channel. Be prepared - picture of brain anatomy to memorize vocabulary. Structures: Cerebellum, Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Corpus Callosum, Primary Auditory Cortex, Frontal Lobe, Limbic System, etc. Functions: Broca’s Area the brain processes how to respond to the spoken words. The neurons fire within the the Cerebral Cortex’s Frontal Lobe to the Motor Cortex to direct how to move mouth to speak. The professor not only gives the definitions but also explains how men and women process language differently. Additionally, he explains how the left hemisphere processes sequentially and the right hemisphere creates global ideas such as artistic symmetry.

    Actually learned something!
This is the easiest to understand and most helpful psychology teaching course that I’ve found. It’s genuinely interesting to listen to the professor explain different theories. I’m taking a psychology course while living in Sweden but the lessons that I take here aren’t nearly as clear as this. Thank you for making this course!

I used these to prepare for CLEP test because it has been 10 years since I was a psychology major. I really appreciated this resource and it helped me prepare and pass my exam! Thank you!

    CLEP companion
Listened to these lectures. Along with flashcards and the college board guide for CLEP exam, I easily passed with a high score. These lectures are definitely not as efficient as the Modern States lectures but they are more in depth and the anecdotes pull it all together. Thank you so much for publishing this resource!
