pmcmartOne of the bestI don’t actually recall how I found out about this podcast but it has become a mainstay in my lineup.

BaronipandnuLovely podcast butGenerally love this podcast, it’s a great look at what part of the country I’m not familiar with, however I did have to point out a correction. The most recent episode title is “Wherefore art thou, Romeo? At JACK’s!” Wherefore is why, not where. In the speech that this line is taken from, Juliet is lamenting the fact that Romeo is a Montague and thus her sworn enemy, she is not questioning his precise geographical location. ‘Why are you, Romeo? At Jack’s!’ makes absolutely no sense.

leontheartistSomewhat informativeGood episodes highlighting restaurants and cuisines listeners may not be aware of or have experienced. The part that gets me is in the soul food restaurant in LA episode they describe this poor restaurant is lost in a sea of whiteness. “Chatsworth is bastion of whiteness” described by a reporter who is also white. Leave the politics out of the food. We’re all Americans.

justletmepostGood content, but too many ads nowI’m glad Gravy got rescued and there are new episodes again, but I’m annoyed by how many ads the new host company is cramming into all the episodes, even old ones. I’m still catching up, and there are several minutes of ads in 5 year old episodes, ads that are unrelated to Gravy in content or style. It’s very jarring after years of episodes with a mild request for donations and a brief mention of a sponsor.

CammyJuIntelligent and enjoyable!I discovered this show through Vanishing Postcards, and you better believe I’ll be sticking around for some more Gravy!

shortspark222GalvestonWhat a great vignette about Galveston, TX: The history, the immigrant impact (particularly the Italians) and the fascinating stories of the characters that were interviewed. (Loved hearing the ambience of the locations). I was drooling by the end with the stories about the sausage! So good!

Bella in houstonDelish and delightfulI have really enjoyed your offerings from Evan Stern. He’s got a natural talent for drawing the listener in to the story. I’ve really enjoyed them all. He hooked me so much in the Wends piece that I actually looked up where to order the noodles. They arrived a couple days ago and I don’t see how I’ll ever go back now that I’ve had these cooked in chicken broth and butter. Delicious!

sahorstThoughtful, Informative, a great escape!Super impressed by the stories of the SFA showcases—and have been absolutely LIVING for these Texas episodes!

play overruledThis is weirdI joined SFA for food, recipes fun. This podcast is some strange NPR like show with unintelligent commentary that is in a word weird. The content is completely unrelated to southern food. The politics and historical insights are incomprehensible and some episodes are under 5 minutes. This is not podcasting. Please start over tell me how to make low country boil, gumbo, talk about poor boys, frying, tailgating, church picnics. Are you really in the douth?

JJacks93From AlabamaI’m a massage therapist and sometimes I get bored during a massage so I put in an ear bud to listen to podcasts and pass the time faster. I listened to the first episode and haven’t been able to put it down! I tell EVERYONE about this show!

*Teri*Great topic just a little aside issue no big dealTopic very interesting and well researched , interesting research on food and changed in Americans sizes . Aside: the “music “ in the background became overwhelming and took over the audio at points hard to listen in ear buds Love Gravy !

Friedrice&corncakeA Way InI grew up in the New York City area, as usually is the case one has to leave one’s hometown to gain an appreciation for it. That sort of happened. Friends would wonder why I would be fascinated by biscuits with sausage gravy, gumbo or a big slice of cake. As someone who is working class 1st generation Chinese I have no illusions about the complexities immigrants must navigate in the South or anywhere else honestly. I know there will always be some who are threatened by other voices and traditions not their own and others who will welcome them. This podcast is a window into the South, it may not be a view everyone cares for, but I’m thankful it’s there.

GrokAddisonExploring culture through our most universal resource: foodGravy you should listen to from the beginning. It’s fantastic. It’s the podcast of the Southern Foodways Alliance so they’re using good as a gateway to talk about culture. Historical stories, immigrant stories, people stories all told through a lens of food. From a synagogue in Louisiana, to “Patel motels”, to Latin American stable hands in Kentucky’s horse racing industry, to a a radio show sponsored by a biscuit mix Garvey does a deep dive into Southern American one bite at a time.

Battle666toads420Life is politicalBeen reading reviews and this podcast isn’t “preachy” at all, they are literally spelling out the facts of reality in a changing south, very informative and well produced

nubi14What happened!I used to love this podcast. It was my favorite of many that I listen to on iTunes. Please get back to your roots, because this used to be a delight and isn’t anymore.
-
Andre_TThis used to be a great podcast. Not so much anymore.I used to look forward to the next drop of Gravy Podcast. (Pun intended). Now every episode seems to be not about food per se but about the downtrodden and quite frankly I don’t care to listen to that. At least not every podcast. The last few months have been nothing I want to listen to. I came back because it started being about food again. Then we went to prisons and sexual harassment and tipping. This podcast is not worth the time I invest. I had considered donating but why would I when the product they put out continues to be not what they advertise. Southern Cooking. It has gotten worse since the new hosts (about two years now) took over. I wish I could give it a lower grade then one star. I listen to the old shows and pick through the morass that is the new ones.
-
mdcooper88Yum!John T. and Melissa are much better hosts than the earlier ones. Love the podcast! Would be ok to sometimes focus on more traditional southern food traditions rather than always new readings.
-
Rosalie MayLove!I love this podcast! It is political, but I enjoy that along with the history and food descriptions. I love hearing people’s stories and it is quite enlightening.
-
notsoemogirlThese episodes stick with youThis is one of the few podcasts where I listen to the episodes more than once. I trap my family in the car so that they listen to the deep and varied stories from across the south. It reminds me often of the depth of reporting I find in Texas Monthly.
-
fiddlermalazPolitics, not foodShould be called Liberal Gravy. Very preachy podcast in the episodes I listened to. Pushed diversity with food/cooking as a background topic. Can anyone recommend a podcast on Southern food and cooking where the passion and focus is Southern food and cooking?
-
LurlizzJust the take I was looking for.I came across this podcast in the past month or so, just before I move back to the South after four years spent in Chicago. I wanted something that explored some of the social and political and religious and cultural issues of the South, and how perfect that it’s centered around food, as food is one of the things I love most about the South. I also love that it is produced by Southerners, and isn’t some effort by those outside to try and understand us, like we’re some sort of case study. I’d recommend this to anyone!
-
mcatpeeryI love this podcastI am a food nerd with ties to the south who loves history and storytelling. So thank you for basically creating a podcast that is tailored for me! The only problem is how often it makes me hungry 😊
-
EvboooooFantastic storytellingBeautiful representation of southern food and the culture that is woven through it
-
Found a new slantMust listenThe best food podcast there is
-
rap_mogula beautiful food showIt's really nice to hear a food show that's not about cooking or restaurants I'll probably never go to, but instead about bigger issues. It's basically This American Life that makes you hungry.
-
KnittingLeaI love Gravy!I always learn something new... all by talking about food! Yum!
-
asdef2018My favorite podcastOnly flaw there aren’t enough of them! But quality takes time.

-
LeslieNBTXGood stuff!Gravy is always informative, interesting and important. It serves up good, old Southern food traditions with a generous side of new offerings, thanks to a generation of immigrants.
-
SimerghOne of the best Food history podcasts (also podcast in general)This is where history, poetry, stories, and food melt into one amazing podcast.
-
SquirrelhengeThe South is EverywhereThe Gravy podcast is the embodiment of my believe that wherever you go, you'll find the South. It offers a wonderful, insightful view into the way our food and our culture are not exclusionary, but all-encompassing. Well done, y'all.
-
EdmundPerryWrong Audio this weekI think you guys sent out the wrong tape. I'm listening in to 12 min editing session. Look forward to the episode
-
AllihagiLove it.Beautifully produced, wonderful insights and excellent story telling.

Saakimba! My actual favorite podcast out there. As a longtime, avid podcast listener, I have many, many favorites. Though not raised in the south myself, I have long had a love and appreciation for southern cuisine as perhaps the only truly unique American cuisine in existence and, as a devout lover of all things excellent food-wise and an adroit cook, the relevance of this work has not escaped me. When you add to the SFA’s work as a whole the extremely polished and sublimely southern vibe of the finished podcasts with a healthy dose of integrated cultures and social justice, you have a podcast that has soundly made it to the top of my most favorite 'casts out there. They also shine a valuable light on the loving, community focused, tolerant aspects of the south, which is much needed in these troubled times. Their work is invaluable to me and, I’m certain, many others. I deeply appreciate their efforts.
-
EbeehjEasily my favoriteI adore this podcast. It is entertaining and well-produced, and really shows the diversity of the South and all the people who make their home there.
-
AnnaelizaSo excellentI look forward to every episode of this podcast - it's a smart, refreshing look at food and culture (and so much more) in the modern south, and the intelligent look at the intricacies of southern regional culture makes me feel seen and understood as a liberal southerner in a modern world.
-
PranksterkingBest PodcastI listen to a lot of podcasts and this is the best one of them all. As a child of immigrants who was born and raised in the urban South and went to college in the rural South, this podcast speaks to me.

Coach muscle hamsterExcellentGreat
-
alm and booBeautiful, Smart StorytellingI meant to only listen to one episode this morning. Im four in now. My Granny, from Tennessee, passed when I was in high school and listening to the voices and sounds of the South are bringing her into my Arizona home. I'm also learning so much about a people and place that I have ties to but unfortunately not a lot of knowledge of. Also there's some food thrown in.
-
Hamiltonl87Some interesting episodes but too much identity politicsThere are some great episodes in here but it focuses a lot on highlighting different populations' contribution to southern food. A lot of it sounds like intellectual narcissism and is full of factual errors.

Hungry PodcastBest food podcast to date.Gravy was one of the shows that inspired me to become a podcast producer a couple years ago. As a food/story lover, I was often disappointed when podcasts started taking off because all these food shows had excellent content but were dry and uninsiring. Finding the Gravy podcast was a breath of fresh, fried-chicken scented air. The show is beautifully constructed and gets to the stories about food that need to be told. It is a poingnant portrait of the South that ropes in influence from all over the world. If you need a food podcast with some bite, you best be listening to Gravy. Much love - the Hungry podcast
