Science #56

SciShow Tangents is the lightly competitive knowledge showcase from the geniuses behind the YouTube series SciShow. Every other Tuesday, join Hank Green, Ceri Riley, and Sam Schultz as they try to one-up and amaze each other with weird and funny scientific research... while not getting distracted. There will be tangents about video games, music, weird smells, surprisingly deep insights about life, and of course, poop, but it always comes back to the science.

    Sorry the show’s ending
I saved the last episode for two weeks because I was traveling but really because I wasn’t ready for the show to end. But I’m listening to it now and I want to let you guys know how much I’ve enjoyed listening to all of you for the last few years. Don’t forget to be awesome!

    End of an era
I came across SciShow Tangents during the pandemic. It became a great source of stress relief, a show where folks just geeked out about science facts for an hour+. Really sad to see it go, but all things end, I suppose…

    I will miss this show!
I’m listening to one of my favorite episodes, “Cheese,” in the early hours of the morning, realizing my show will soon be ending. Know that you all have brought smiles, knowledge, and often comfort during migraines over the years. Thank you.

    A very tardy review
Tangents has been something that has made my Tuesdays something to look forward to since it first launched years ago. The traditional science poems always warm my heart and even make me laugh. The butt facts at the end are wild and wonderful. It is with regret that I write this review, much later than I should have as it is windind down. If you’ve not listened yet, I unconditionally reccomend giving it a listen. silly Tuesday science amazing knowledge and jokes butt just one more please? P.S. I even used one of the amazing butt facts in a birthday poem last year.
  • ¡Awesome!
    Fantastic
This podcast is like listening to my nerd friends chat about all the cool science they know. Hilarious, fascinating, approachable, and always puts me in a good mood. Highly recommend!

    Endlessly enjoyable and educational
I love listening to this podcast. I learn new things every episode. It’s one of the best podcasts out there.

This podcast is exceptional! I always learn something new and laugh in every episode.

Flightless birds?! What more do you want?
I’ve been a fan of SciShow and Crash course and all things Hank for some years now and I am so happy that there are now more podcasts related to the YouTube content! The hosts are all so wonderful and witty and kind to each other it’s hilarious to listen to. I think they do a pretty good job of sharing airtime between them. I always end up with a laugh and some extra knowledge! I could not recommend this podcast enough! I would love to see episodes on: Smiling/facial expressions, cosmetics and Attraction.

    TANGENTS…
I normally do not write reviews, in fact I never have, but I find this is too special not to. This podcast has been my favorite without a doubt for months, it has fun trivia-even if I forget the next day (though I swear one day someone will ask me about the monkeys that ride deer and I will be prepared), likable hosts, and SOOO MUCH more humor than I was expecting. Each one of the hosts shine in their own ways and bring out the best in each other; there’s no way I could ever pick a favorite: but I choose Stefan, Stefan is my favorite. Even so all of the hosts have only gotten better as the podcast has progressed. My only regret is I just recently found out there was more show after the main show ended; like a post credit scene in those undeniably worsening marvel movies. If you have the time or simply wish to stop doom scrolling in that endless abyss of meaningless content, CHECK OUT THIS SHOW, you won’t regret it! And if you do it’s you, you have bad taste and I’m sorry for your loss.

A great listen as these guys fill your ears with facts and laughs

This show rocks! I live learning the facts, testing my science knowledge and feeling smart when I get it right!

This show is my happy place. I learn something new every single episode.

    Helped me win trivia!
I’ve been binge listening to all of the episodes since I learned about the podcast a month or so ago. In one round of bar trivia tonight the podcast helped me get two answers right! One obscure one about molasses 😅 I LOVE the show. I’m always learning new things and laughing along the way.

    I laugh AND I learn!
This podcast is so good. The hosts poke fun at themselves and at each other all while being nerdy about cool science stuff. I really enjoy the banter. I also like how they get some of the questions wrong, just like me. I get to do two of my favorite things while listening: learn and laugh.

    Love this show!
I found this gem of a podcast a couple of weeks ago and have been listening to the older episodes first. It’s hysterical and informative at the same time. Rated PG for some mild swearing. The cast is great, Hank, Sam and Ceri keep the show lively and make each other laugh. Best older episode so far is “Dust”. Show suggestion: the intelligence of birds in the family Corvid

    Amazing! Please keep it up!
This podcast is the highlight to our breakfast! We listen to an episode every morning on the weekend as we sit outside and have a blast learning and laughing. Thank you for doing this and sharing it with us. Each of you are great poets far superior to anything I could write!

A million stars. Please do Wasps.
LOVE. The day i discovered this podcast i listened to it for six hours straight on a long drive. The craziest fact i have learned is that Orin is like an entire person now and not in fact a baby; how time flies. i love y'all so much please never stop making this ever. Also, i formally propose Wasps as an episode topic.

    Bright squirrels!
Just listened to cities episode. Sorry, I’m not on twitter so hopefully this comment will make it to you this way. Squirrels are bright colors, just not in the spectrum of light humans perceive! Check it out, lots of animals glow wild colors under other wavelengths of light!

This podcast makes running way less miserable
This podcast has been a regular part of my running routine for a few years now, as it fits nicely into the overlap of funny and entertaining while also being informative and educational. I had to write a review after the “Blue” episode because when Sam started singing his Blue song at the beginning it literally made me run faster. I thought to myself, “If he can do that, then I can do this,” and upped my pace for the remainder of my run. So, thank you for years of distracting me from the misery of distance running and motivating me to keep it up, all while teaching me about the wacky scientific world!

    Great, but have one request
I recently came upon this podcast and have been listening regularly. I am still about two years behind, but I’m sure I will be caught up shortly. How many times has Ceri said “I’m no physicist but”, well could you consider replacing Stefan with a physicist. It would greatly round up the science knowledge on the show. Hank with the chemistry background and Ceri with her biology knowledge. All the show needs is a regular physicist to explain things to the Everyman Thanks .

    Always a good time
I always feel a lil bit smarter after listening and like I’m hanging out w friends, what a joy!!

Wish I could review each episode
Love this show! I’ve been listening for the last 6 months or so but have already listened through 90% of available episodes. It’s an incredibly informative show while still being funny and wholesome. 10/10 Would and have recommended!

Awesomeness distilled and crafted into a science podcast
I just discovered this podcast when Hank did a guest appearance on the No Such Thing as a Fish. Based on his charm and wit I decided to give this podcast a try. So glad I did! I have been listening obsessively and learned so much! Love this podcast!

Is everything I want in a podcast
It’s informative, hilarious, hosted by people I genuinely enjoy listening to. It’s fun to play along during the trivia segment too! I’m constantly sharing weird fun facts I’ve learned from this podcast all the time.

    It is so good
I truly cannot get enough of this show
  • @casshelm
Your drink will shoot out of your nose but you’ll have learned something.
Nowhere else can you learn so much and laugh so hard. The hosts are engaging, the format is easy to follow, and I genuinely learn something new and interesting every time. This helps me grow as a person; I feel like I can share what I learned because it’s explained so well. Follow the show on Twitter, it’s interactive!

    My favorite podcast
This show has easily become my favorite podcast! The facts are the best mix of fascinating and funny, and the hosts feel like my friends. But the true hidden gem is the science poem every week. Easily my favorite part of the whole show

    i love this podcast !!
i love this podcast so much. it is the perfect mix of goofy and informative. having hosts with diverse backgrounds is also great and makes it so that anyone can learn something from each episode no matter how much of a science background you have !! i work in a stem cell research lab and some days will listen to this podcast alone for 10 hours straight while i work. the pace is just right where i'm never bored but also never lost (even if someone has gone on a tangent). 10/10 science communication 10/10 laughs 10/10 butt stuff. P.S. please do an episode on stem cells !! love, your resident-stem-cell-scientist-listener

    SciShow Tangents
SciShow Tangents has become my favorite podcast lately! Hank, Sam, Ceri, and Stephen make such a fun and engaging team and always leave me laughing. They make the show so fun and make the topic they are talking about easy to understand.
  • Lsly86
    So enjoyable
Came for Hank, stayed for Ceri and Sam. I listened to the most recent episode to see what it was about and immediately started from the beginning. The guests are so enjoyable!
  • rozelynn20
    Brilliant games!
The fun games are so engaging! I love guessing along with the hosts! Even as a ‘non science person’ I love getting to try my mind at the challenges.

    Scishow Tangents
Favorite podcast honestly. Can’t decide who I like more between Hank, Sam and Ceri so I won’t! So much science and personality.

does anyone else think sam sounds like josh gondelman’s son?!
  • lyokolover
    Great!
I had this podcast recommended to me and I’ve had to limit how many episodes I listen to. I love that things are explained in a simple way so anyone can understand. Plus, I’ve learned many random facts.
  • atimburtonproduction
    One of the best
One if the best podcasts I've come across, very much akin to ‘Let’s Learn Everything’, and there is so many more episodes of Tangents! Love the show, thank y'all for you.

    Episode Suggestion: Magic
As a delivery driver. These keep me going. Great job y’all✨
  • @BrocusPocus
    Perfect for long car rides!
So informative, funny, and you get to play along with the hosts. My husband and I love this show and we listened to many episodes on our 18 hour car ride from Wisconsin to Yellowstone.
  • scientific_squid
    My favorite podcast
I listen to other podcasts (like the extensive Dear Hank & John archives) while I’m waiting for new episodes, but nothing fills the void and makes the human experience tolerable quite like SciShow Tangents.
  • Rosemary_Listens
    But wait, one more thing!
Science and potty humor. All one needs. (:
  • Nickosaur
Interesting I enjoy the show but…
Sporadic volume levels drive me nuts, like one moment I can barely hear so I’ll put the volume High, then someone will get excited or laugh and it’ll blow my eardrums/speakers out. We really need some sort of volume stability
  • person 80
    My daily show
It sounds insane but I haven’t listened to music in weeks because all I can listen to is this podcast. Please make a cartography or other geography-themed episode!
  • Lucy - listening and knitting
    Great knitting entertainment!
I haven’t listened to every episode yet, but I love to listen to this podcast when I’m knitting! I always learn something new, even if I don’t always remember it well enough to tell everyone I want to tell about it. Occasionally I burst out laughing in the living room and my family looks at me weird, but I have no other criticisms. I love it so much, and I always look forward to having something to cheer me up on Tuesday.
  • dstoker51
    Tons of fun!
Love the content, love the personal connections between the hosts!

    Thanks
You made my latest road-trip with a 9 year old so much fun. Thank you so much!
  • fellow science nerd
Hank knows my sense of humor
Let’s just appreciate how Hank Green drives the conversation to the edge of absurdity and keeps it somehow still scientific— or at least scientific enough that Ceri can come in and drop some knowledge
