The Grawlix Saves The World

Stand-Up #40

Standup comedians battle to offer the best advice to their listeners’ problems. Broadcasting live from sunny Riff City, USA, The Grawlix (Ben Roy, Andrew Orvedahl, and Adam Cayton-Holland) are here to help, but mostly they’re here to win. Get ad-free episodes and bonus content at patreon.com/grawlixsaves.• The Grawlix: Adam, Ben and Andrew have been performing standup and sketch comedy as a trio for 20 years. Their self-titled monthly live standup comedy show, The Grawlix, is one of the longest running and most respected indie showcases in the United States. They created, wrote, and starred in TruTV’s scripted comedy series Those Who Can’t for three seasons. Collectively they were named one of Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch. For the last five years, the boys hosted The Grawlix Saves the World, a comedy podcast about self improvement that received accolades from the Denver Post, Huffington Post, Lifehacker and more. They are lifelong friends, self-proclaimed experts in everything and “practically doctors,” a claim that will almost certainly get them sued one day.• Ben Roy has released five standup albums and his standup special, HYENA (streaming on Hulu), was named one of NPR’s top comedy specials of 2023. He is national touring headliner who has performed at countless comedy festivals, including Montreal’s Just for Laughs and South by Southwest, and his standup and acting has been featured on HBO’s Funny as Hell series, numerous Comedy Central shows, and TruTV’s Talk Show The Game Show. • Adam Cayton-Holland has released six comedy albums and a 30-minute special on Comedy Central. His latest special, Wallpaper, is currently streaming on Hulu. He has made multiple appearances on CONAN, The Late Late Show with James Corden, and numerous comedy festivals. He also recently adapted his award-winning memoir, Tragedy Plus Time, into the feature film See You When I See You, which is currently in post-production.• Andrew Orvedahl has released three albums and his special, Doom Math, is currently available on Amazon Prime and Apple TV. He has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and several comedy festivals, including Montreal’s Just for Laughs, Bridgetown, SXSW, and the Great American Comedy Festival.

How did I just find this!?
I’m so upset and grateful at the same time that I am only now just discovering this. I knew of the guys since Those Who Can’t, which I still whole-heartily believe is one of the best shows that’s ever existed. I’ve seen Adam and Ben perform live in Fort Collins (where I live) since seeing the show and keep looking out for an opportunity to see Andrew. Now that I know about their Bug Theater show because of this podcast, that’s for sure on my list now. I’m getting caught up now with the podcast and am up to 2021 episodes. I have a one hour commute each way to work and, since discovering this, I look forward to the drive because it’s a time for me to listen to the podcast. It’s amazing and I adore it. I’m excited to go to work and the guys make my day, for sure. Absolutely amazing.

    Valid educational advice
As a teacher who used to watch “Those Who Can’t,” I have always appreciated their satire of US education. But, if you’re a teacher, too, check out the episode “Those Who Can Give Good Advice” for some (unexpectedly) good advice on what makes a great teacher (and, many solid laughs).

    So funny!
These guys are hilarious! I’m so glad I started listening last year. I laugh out loud every episode. Their live show in Denver is such a great time, but I’m so glad I get to enjoy their humor weekly. I love their dynamic together. We always need more laughter, so I highly recommend The Grawlix Saves the World.

    Happy Birthday Andrew
This episode infuriated me because I’m six months older than Andrew. I don’t feel old. Andrew is not old. I’m not old. The Grawlix rules but Ben and Adam can be cruel to forty-seven year olds.

    Earnestness Horn
Everyone has that one podcast that is their podcast home, the one they always come back to, and this is mine. I’ve taken a ride through Riff City more times than I can count. The Grawlix is consistently humble, hilarious, and heart warming. Which is something the world could use more of.

If you liked the old episodes I have bad news…
The new format isn’t great. It’s just complaining and talking. There’s no challenges anymore. I’m very disappointed in the podcast now. It went from funny to well… something not so great. R.I.P to what once was a good time.

    Waaaaay too long
Good storytelling but needs much tighter editing to cut out a ton of repetition.

    I don’t like podcasts…
but I love this podcast so much! I was a casual listener to the Grawlix Saves the World whenever my husband would put it on in the car, but recently I started listening as a way to cheer myself up and man did it work! You guys make me laugh so much, you are all hilarious and awesome, and Ben you’re my favorite!!!
  • Jazimus4444
    Conspiracy? Murder? Vigilantism!? No.
… At least not in the challenges so far. Step into your new favorite para-social ménage a trios with this delightful, intellectually-balanced comedy crew! Like a three man idiot-savant, they’re here to do something! So abandon all other financial efforts and pour money on these poor elder millennials until they go weekly!

    Both funny and fun.
Not sure how this ended up on my feed, but I clicked on it and I’m really glad that I did. GSTW is both funny and fun. The way they make each other laugh makes me laugh, and it’s great to listen to on my commute or when I’m trying to get through a difficult spreadsheet (the data don’t analyze themselves). I also enjoy the variety of the challenges. Some of my favorites include the Ulysses challenge, Bird Watching, and the Swimming challenge. Another thing I like is the stand up comedy clips that they play during the break. It’s a way to discover comics that I’ve not heard before. I enjoy it so much that I’ve upgraded to the Ben level via Patreon. Looking forward to my personalized welcome message.

    My most recommended podcast
This is by far my most recommended podcast. I simply refuse to stop telling people about it. After listening to it on my recommendation, other people have described it as having a “feral energy”…but I’m choosing to take that as a compliment.

So nice you can listen to episodes twice
This is the only podcast that I will listen to episodes more than once. Having a bummer day? GSTW. Have a long, boring drive? GSTW. Struggling through a workout? GSTW. Upset that new episodes only come out every other week? GSTW Patreon.

    Sore Hearts, Angry Bellies
I have rewound the vegan episode over and over to get the complete list of foods that upset the Grawlix tummies. It’s possible to get Ben Roy into a Misery type entrapment with some cleverly disguised bean mung.

    Tired of terrible “comedy”.
When did words delivered like a joke come to replace actually funny content. I get sick of these podcasts where it’s a few people who are cracking each other up but not saying anything funny. It’s like they’re fooling each other into thinking they are saying humorous things because the delivery of lines have the cadence of a joke but yet nothing is they say is funny. Apple Podcasts I don’t think know how to categorize podcasts as comedy. Or maybe these people don’t know they aren’t funny. Just because you have some comedians talking on a podcast doesn’t make it comedy. I keep waiting for myself to laugh and all I hear are these idiots laughing at each others nonjokes. Anyways, the Grawlix is nothing like that. Quite possibly the only truly funny podcast in the comedy genre on Apple Podcasts. Can’t get enough. Love these guys.

    Earnestness and absurdity
Honestly I look forward to listening to this podcast more than any other of my regulars (and there are some very good ones out there.) I’ve now listened to every episode, and I feel like I’ve really come to understand these guys. They’ve helped me through some very challenging times, via the Magic of Podcasting ✨ The genuine deep laughs I’ve received are healing, and I believe that the Grawlix is unequivocally making the world a better place. Love listening to these jokesters. Absolute wordsmiths. They are vulnerable and angry, erudite and juvenile, sexy and dorky, well-known and approachable, competitive and team players. The whole package. Truly, I am Boi Crazy for THESE hunks.

    Libtard tomfoolery
When I first listened to this pod my favorite part was the incredible amount of sexual tension between the hosts. As I listened further it became the only reason anyone listens to this show, boi crazy. But now having listened to every single episode I realized what my true favorite part was. The thing I enjoy the most about this pod is that it does not matter what sort of libtard tomfoolery occurs or how many times Ben cries because in the end Ben always says “play us out Charlie.” And that is the type of consistency I wish I could have in other parts of my life. Stay boi crazy, MZ

    Hilarious!
I love the show and have been listening from the jump, even though Andrew won’t come and perform in Pittsburgh (I heard he is deathly afraid of rivers meeting.)

Smartless Wishes They Were This Good
The best 3-man pod in the biz. Any famous schmuck can succeed with celebrity interviews. These guys bring the funny unaided by the crutch of fame (yes Those Who Can’t is phenomenal and at least three way more successful tv shows should be paying these guys royalties, but a 3-season TruTV show does not equal fame). With the best third act in the game and the most detailed imaginary city, don’t sleep in this show. Start with the swimming episode and listen to every episode to get all the jokes!

This is… something. You need to stoned to listen to them I assume?

When people say "Do Better," they mean try to be more like The Grawlix
I love the effort all these fellas put forth (even though Ben seems to be the only one who truly completes each challenge faithfully, to the letter of the law, and with true earnestness.) Although Adam and Andrew often try to take shortcuts to cheat their way through many of the challenges, I don't hold that against them because they are both good-looking and have excellent taste in music.

Uplifting and Funny I want to own a one bedroom place in Riff City
These guys have the goods. Every episode leaves me wanting more because it’s just so much fun. All 3 hosts are equally funny and smart - but each in their own way. Adam is the bearded, seemingly brainy one with his big heart, quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge of the Bibliotheca bibliothecarum and the Oxford Dictionary. I’d expect meeting him wearing a tweed jacket with square patches on the elbows, wrinkled “slacks”, and well-worn turtleshell glasses teaching creative writing to undergrads. Andrew is the level-headed one who blindsides everyone with a quip that pulls the rug under everyone leading to big laughs. Andrew was a character in a 1970s Saturday morning cartoon, he could voice a LOT of them first-of-all, but I think he’d be Shleprock from Pebbles and Bam Bam. “Wowsy wowsy woo woo. Somebody turned my D

    SO FREAKIN GOOD
My husband started listening to the Grawlix during COVID, and then we dove into Those Who Can’t on HBO. Now we’re both huge fans! This podcast is hilarious and endearing and raw at times. The cover art is awesome too. I highly recommend going to see them live at the Bug!

    Marry me?
If (when) my wife leaves me, I wanna marry this pod and have its babies. I don't listen to podcasts but this one quite literally has me wheezing & laughing so hard that I've had to pause several episodes just to catch my breath. Seriously, my cheeks still hurt from laughing. It's hysterical, informative, wholesome, heartwarming, and precisely what our mildew-stained shower tile of a planet needs right now. This pod is a rock-hard 11 out of 10 crisp high-fives and I will continue to listen and promote it for as long as it's still around. P.S. I normally listen on Spotify but I wanted to leave a written review so I went all Fred Frankenstein on my Apple account from 15 years ago just to leave this review. Post P.S. Please don't tell my wife that I have a plan for when she leaves me.

The best anti-self help Self Help
I have never laughed harder at 3 friends and a producer taking on funnier challenges to earnestly (honk honk) better themselves and help others by doing so. Hilarious at every turn, Adam, Ben, and Andrew find the best part of themselves and absolutely destroy each other as only close friends can. My drive and workouts feel shorter thanks to these guys and I’m a little more thoughtful thanks to some of their challenges. Their Patreon is the best subscription I’ve ever had.

    I %#!@$ love this podcast!
Long time fan, recent listener of the pod. Catching up and just listened to the Divine Intervention episode today…while driving, which may have been a huge mistake because I was laughing uncontrollably and %#!@$ almost missed my turn at a 4-way stop. All 3 of the boys’ experiences were fantastic, but it was Adam’s attendance at “part 2 of 3” that got me at that stop sign. I WILL finally visit the Church of Cannabis thanks to Ben’s glowing review. I’m with Andrew on the atheism, and fully appreciated his ability to describe his Quaker (Friends) in such a non-judgmental way. Thanks, boys! Can’t wait to catch up on all the ep’s.

I’d rather share a life raft with a cannibal
Do they stop asteroids? No. Do they stop the creep of bad ska out of already gentrified areas? They try. Do they help make sexy saxophone ringtones? I don’t know. What I do know is they are great guys and are giving, caring, and Adam. You should listen for so many reasons. Mostly their intense latent yet overt sexuality.

    Big fan.
Sound the earnestness horn! This is without a doubt my favorite podcast. Thank you for all of the entertainment. You guys are the best. When I tweet at you guys you respond and that is so cool. I hope to listen for years to come. Can’t wait to see each of you when you come to Portland.

    Love love love love
Ugh I adore this podcast. Laugh out loud funny on multiple occasions for every episode. Sometimes the challenge for the week may take listeners into “boner killer” territory if it brings up a trouble area for one of you. All three of you navigate these moments wonderfully and it makes me love this podcast all the more for its honest and vulnerable moments *earnestness horn*. Thank you for all you do.

The episode where Andrew tries to speak Spanish made me laugh audibly out loud, and at the time I listened to it, I was on airplane. Didn’t even care that the folks around me were probably wondering what I was laughing at. So locos. Love this pod and listen every other week!
