Dark House

107

At the crossroads of true crime, interior design, and the paranormal, Dark House explores beautiful homes that can’t seem to escape their dark histories. Hosts and House Beautiful editors Hadley Mendelsohn and Alyssa Fiorentino dig into the twisted backstories of four infamous homes, and uncover the strange stories suggesting some inhabitants never left—and that perhaps history isn't the only thing haunting them. Featuring guest interviews with authors, set designers, psychic mediums, and paranormal investigators, Dark House uncovers why these residences, and the stories they tell us, are so important.

    Miss this so much!
Hands down one of my all time favorite podcasts. These women do incredible research and present the stories in an interesting, yet professional way. I would love to hear more from them.

Miss listening to the girls and their creep stories!

    Bring it back!
This is one of the best researched and performed true crime/creepy podcasts. There’s nothing the right tone to replace it. Come back!

I miss this show so much!!!
Every few months I come back to the site in hopes it is back in production, or there has been a special release. But no luck. So I’ll keep hoping. BTW the Waco episodes were fantastic. I’ve yet to see any documentary, or news segment as good as what was done on this site. It deserves an award.

    Miss the Show
I was so sad to get to the most recent episode and find out it was the last. Love the premise and the hosts. Most detailed coverage I’ve ever heard about the Black Dahlia. Please bring this show back!

    Please come back!
Would love to see this show return. This is such a great podcast. Love hearing about the homes and then what happens in the homes. The hosts tell a great story from a fresh perspective.Thank you, this is so good! Please come back.

    Great research
This was the first podcast that really kept my attention. It’s very well researched and the conversational tone is engaging. The hosts could just dial down the vocal fry and virtue signaling a bit. But if the show was brought back, I would be the first to start binging!

Interesting stories except for the political and personal opinions by the hosts
I’m not sure how I stumbled upon this podcast so I decided to listen. Many of the stories about homes and properties with troubling histories and/or unexplained instances taking place in them are pretty interesting. I also appreciate the fact that they’re interior design/decorators because their knowledge helped me be able to visualize these places. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the hosts inevitably inject their politics, and virtue-signaling while narrating. 😕 For better or for worse, our country’s (or states) history happened, regardless of how wonderful or terrible it may be in retrospect. Judging those who lived 100+ or so years ago by one’s 2024 standards and knowledge is immature, ignorant and annoying. We are unable to change that however we can hopefully learn from it now and not repeat it. The virtue signaling is cloying and detracts from the stories being told. I’ve now listened to almost all of the episodes and can say that I’ve learned quite a bit about other places so I sincerely appreciate that. It appears that this podcast want not canceled but was instead intentionally done as a limited episode podcast. I’d still listen to it if it were to somehow come back. p.s. Regarding the episode “Victoria’s Black Swan Inn” in San Antonio, Texas, please note the correct pronunciation(s). 😊 Bexar County is “Bear” or “Bare” not “Bex-ahr or Bex-er. Salado is “Sah-lay-doe” not “Sah-lah-doe.”

    Ok content, annoying hosts
I wanted to like this podcast, but they tend to get derailed pretty quickly. They venture off onto their soapboxes a good bit, so you have to just skip ahead through all that.

    On the right track
Love the concept! Please bring it back! Only one piece of feedback. The hosts are a bit valley girl and unpolished. I feel like I’m listening to some late 20 somethings at brunch with mimosas. The vocal fry is unbearable. The hosts seem smart and well read, they just need about ten more years on them professionally.

    Unique, wonderful-please bring DH back!
Hadley and Alyssa put together a fun yet thoughtful, respectful and truly unique podcast! I really miss DH and still listen to old episodes, despite it’s cancellation, because it’s too good to give up. No other podcast replicates the same mix of easy charm, professionalism, and unique vibe that DH has. Still crossing my fingers a production company will bring DH back ❤️

    Dark house podcasts,
I just saw a reference to this podcast in a magazine about haunted houses and thought I'd try it, it SEEMS interesting but the women talk entirely to fast and being hard of hearing, miss a lot of info even with my hearing aids. It would help if there was a way to slow it down a bit.

About the Grey Gardens/ Sally Quinn Interview
This was a spectacular interview! One of my close friends is a very well known broadcast journalist who knows I’m a big SQ fan, and I actually sent this episode to her not for the subject matter but for the quality of the interview. So interesting- we both think- and we had a GREAT convo about this- perfect excuse to catch up… and we both feel your ages mattered a lot. We are Gen X, and started our careers in journalism working for, and admiring, Second Wave feminists. We also had our daughters after age 40 at that last possible second so we haven’t interfaced much with Millennials- except perhaps to supervise them at work. What we feel (I agree to be the emissary and write this out because I run a farm now and my time is my own, hers is not- her industry has high time demands) is that your Gen is so accepting, so not confrontational (compared to ours and the SG OG Feminists, a group SQ was absolutely dead center in) and so able to hear someone who for decades had to prepare to be walled out or pushed back on because her beliefs are not mainstream and she refuses to pretend they are—- that your LACK of critical condescension toward her really allowed some magic to happen. Her tone changes during the interview. Considerably. By the end, it’s very much like dining with her in a safe space (and one of us would know 😉). While this particular house was an obsession of my Grandmother’s and she passed that to me- I did not at all expect the magic you two made with SQ. If I may offer one piece of knowledge neither of you had—that you might like to have. The accent the Edies is called the “Mid Atlantic Accent.” How I even know this obscure thing: My Alma mater is famous for its speech pathologists and all journalism students have to complete a class in undergrad called “Voice and Articulation.” When I took that class in 1994, the professor identified me as having a residual North Atlantic accent and used me as an example for the class of an arcane speaking style (subtle but weirdly present in 1994, when it had been dead a long time)- but could not identify any regionalisms or other issues in my speech aside from vocal fry. The reason is my Great Grandmother was my caretaker as a child and I spent my summers alone with her in Maine. I had a speech impediment. And was an Irish immigrant to America in the 1930s. To eliminate her brogue she copied the Mid Atlantic accent of the movie stars of the time. So, to help me overcome my speech impediment, we spent summers in Maine watching beta max and later VHS classic films from the 1930s. I covered the impediment by learning alternative ways to pronounce fricatives. I thought I had “flattened” that North Atlantic accent almost entirely by age 18. But my professor caught it instantly. Because when asked to speak in front of the class, under pressure from my peers and wanting an “A,” my adrenaline kicked in and I fell back on it. The professor called me “Hep” for the rest of the semester. Because I am from Connecticut and what Sass Pants lady of the silver screen from Connecticut rocked the Mid Atlantic the best? Katharine Hepburn. Of course 😂! Thank you two so much for a wonderful podcast. I absolutely love it. Creative and weird and wonderful. Well done. Persist! 🙌

    Great Stories, but….
I love the stories of the homes, but listening to these women is a little frustrating at times. If you aren’t sure about something, please research it. T. gondii is a highly studied and know parasite documented since 1908. Toxoplasmosis is the highly studied parasitic infection of these parasites, and medications exist for vulnerable populations. There is an entire institution devoted to researching it and it’s correlation to schizophrenia and personality changes. Circle K is a well known convenient store. Please google these things for a minute or two before recording. I love this podcast aside from the poorly researched chatter.

I love this podcast!!! Fascinating true scary stories and history of homes, with architectural references that make it all come together. As the layers unfold, keeping my interest (which is hard to do) making it the best podcast ever! Looking forward to more and getting in the Halloween spirit!!! Thank you!

    Binge worthy
Found the podcast because I wanted to hear about Taylor Swift’s house, and went back to the first season and got hooked. Fascinating concept and wonderful story telling and guest!

    Vocal Fry
The vocal fry makes this impossible to listen to. Also, reminds me of Crime Junkies and not original at all.
  • QueerVeganRascal
New find for me! 5 stars!
Just found this podcast two days ago, and I am absolutely impressed! The two hosts are perfect at story telling *and* receiving, and the descriptions of the houses and the corresponding history, people, and events involved are divine. More, please! 🙏🏼

Love the Ladies and the Show
A new favorite of mine. Love the intersection of history, home design, and spooky tales. Am impressed by the research that must go into each episode, and wonder how they’d have time for this, in addition to full time jobs at House Beautiful. I’m really sorry to read so much harsh criticism of these young women, and I don’t think it’s respectful or deserved. They are intelligent, articulate, and earnest. I love the rapport between them. They are a pleasure to listen to. If they don’t make a season 4, I won’t blame them! (But I hope they do.) Much respect!

    Good find
I feel lucky to have found a podcast on a subject I adore. The only problem I am having with this podcast is that the narrators, obviously lovely, competent people who have done their research, have an annoying , currently popular, voice inflection. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t like that which is described as vocal fry. So many young people emulate vocal fry nowadays. I hear it all the time. On the radio from the newscaster, in the grocery store, at the dentist from the receptionist. Please stop. It’s not cool. It makes you sound like a fourteen year old. I hate it. It used to be associated with a bored, bratty teen or entitled Valley Girl. Anyway, I digress. The podcast subject matter is fascinating but I have to acclimate myself to the vocal fry if I continue with the subscription.

    Addicted! So good.
I love history, crime (even majored in it), and spirits. This is a great podcast. I am hooked. Alyssa and Hadley, my daughter is also a Cancer born in 1993 on July 1st!! (I think same as Alyssa’s bday) Keep the episodes coming! Love it!

    LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PODCAST!!!
I stumbled upon this podcast in late 2023 and I have been binging it ever since. I have only have a few episodes left now and I am forcing myself to go slower because I don’t want it to end! Oh PLEASE LET THERE BE A SEASON 4!!! Alyssa and Hadley are such wonderful hosts. Unlike other podcasts, where the hosts seem to be swayed by any mention of the paranormal, Alyssa and Hadley explore all sides to an event. They don’t denounce or subscribe emotionally to any one theory but present all angels, backed up by their incredible research, compassion, and intelligence. Love the deep dives into the social, historical, and architectural aspects of the homes, areas, and people who lived in them. The RESEARCH! The amount of research in every episode is FANTASTIC!!!!!! I was very familiar with Grey Gardens and the Black Dahlia Murder, yet those episodes blew me away with the amount of historical information that was uncovered and presented! I also love that the hosts don’t get side tracked with chit chat and chatter, as other podcasts do, and spend upwards to 10-20 minutes talking about what they had for breakfast or other things that have nothing to do with the podcast. I highly recommend this podcast to everyone! Especially if you are interested in the paranormal, true crime, history, architecture, and the complexities of human beings in different eras. Hoping , if possible, to hear an episode in the future covering the history of the beautiful Pickfair Estate in Los Angeles, CA! The original home of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks which was demolished by Pia Zadora many years later due to hauntings.
  • SophieDuval
    Unique!
Im happy to have found this podcast Its a perfect mix of supernatural/crime/ historical stories. I will say i have preferred the newer season/episodes. You can see how they have grown (in s1 the host who had major vocal fry made those episodes a little tough to listen to) Other than that one personal critique, I can’t wait for more. Thanks for all you guys do

    Addicting!
If I could give this podcast 100 stars I would. I love how the information (history, architecture, paranormal, pop culture) is shared and the relationship between the hosts is genuine and relatable. It’s like being with your friends on girl’s night. Their special guests always give insightful context and information on the house they are focused on for the episode. We need more episodes! Hoping for a 2024 season!

  • Mysteries & True Crime!
    Love this podcast!!!
So glad I found this! The hosts are great writers, researchers and storytellers. Every episode surprises me with new historical information and insight regarding well known true crime and paranormal mysteries. PLUS, they discuss so many unknown cases, drawing me into a new rabbit hole of googling each time. Their creative format of using infamous houses to tell the stories which happened within them makes this podcast stand among their genre!! And don’t shy away if you think it’s going to be a “design show”. The house details are subtle and enhance the story.

    We need more!
This is my favorite podcast blending history with interesting architectural insights, nostalgic musings and bone tingling intrigue. Please keep creating because I’m ready to consume! Thanks for making long drives and tedious projects something to look forward to. Season 4 2024 release date?

    Favorite podcast!!!
Great job to the hosts, love the information and research they give. Please keep making more! I love this, I’ve been looking for years for a good podcast on haunted houses & architecture.
  • Kazskiiii
    Love it!
I was not expecting to enjoy this podcast so much! I love the relationship between the hosts, but I appreciate the work put into the research as well as the rich descriptions of the houses. Most importantly, I think the hosts handle the gruesome stories with such sensitivity and humor that it doesn’t have the same rubbernecking quality that other pods seem to have (with exception to Scott Michaels: he’s eww. Did not like his icky sensationalism and opportunistic attitude.)
  • JBCinmarin
    Such a good podcast
I’m addicted to this podcast. Such a good blend between history and lore. And these ladies do their research. I have learned sooo much. Please do a season 4!!!!

    Grey Gardens
What a find: a well-researched and engaging podcast! I’ve always been captivated by the Kennedys, particularly on Jackie’s side. Loved the Grey Gardens movie (Jessica Lange!). This podcast delves much deeper into the many & varied characters that the movie could. Guest speaker Sally Quinn adds riveting stories of her own clairvoyant abilities (omg hexes!) that lend so much to the GG saga. I’m going to re-listen..Thank you for producing a podcast that combines documented history with a twist of otherworldly happenings. VERY entertaining and educational.

    Fascinating stories, well-researched history
I appreciate all the hard work these ladies put in to bring these well-researched and well-written episodes to their fans. Such fascinating topics. I can’t believe we have such a long wait til Season 4. Counting the days. Please keep ‘em coming!

Perfect mix of history, ghosts, and friends
This is my favorite podcast and I couldn’t wait for it to roll around this year. This season was the best! What I love most is the detailed history of not only the house but the property and surrounding area. The hosts take great care to paint a full picture before going into the hauntings/spooky parts of it. I must have more episodes!
  • davinmotion
    Adore Everything About this Podcast!
I just want the hosts and their team to know they do a stellar job putting this podcast together every spooky season. They do such thorough research and they find stories/places I’ve never heard of, both as a true crime mystery fan and an interior design addict. I’m so glad this podcast exists and marries these two subjects together in such a thoughtful way, since it’s such a fascinating concept - what does the place have to do with the story and what happens when everyone leaves? I recommend this podcast to everyone! I have notifications on so I don’t miss the news about next season! :c)
  • MMSloppy
    Superb storytelling
These two tell the stories so wonderfully. They all have creepy vibes, with a historical sense behind each episode. They also have a great rapport together. I’m new to this podcast, I’ve listened to about five episodes so far. They’ve all been amazing, and very well done. I’ve already subscribed and I will listen to them all. Well done, ladies!

    Worst writing
A really poorly written show; like listening to two teenagers yap in a school cafeteria.

    Interesting Stories But…
I appreciate the primary host and the research that she does but the co-host’s interjections are distracting and annoying.
  • meemajnine
    Spooky!
I appreciate Hadley and Alyssa being brave sharing the back stories of haunted houses/spirits! They give so much info because they dig deep into the research for every episode. Their guests are great! I enjoy listening to historical facts and stories. Also, everyone on the pod is respectful when speaking of the people who have passed on and handle every topic with grace.
