The Grief Coach

In 2019 at the age of 30, Brooke lost her father to cancer and immediately searched for resources that respected the gravity of emotions in her grieving process that also offered concrete support. The Grief Coach provides a leading new voice on grief covering everything from the practical to the emotional. Interviewing guests such as innovators in funeral arrangements, spiritual leaders, therapists, authors, and grievers themselves, Brooke has created a space she needed but could not find—one that respects profound loss and the practicality of needing to make decisions in heartbreak.

    What I Needed
I wish that I had been into podcasts back in 2016 when my dad died. These are the conversations and the information that we need to share. Thank you so much!

    Thank you 🙏🏼
As someone who just this week lost her younger brother at 31, I’m learning how to navigate a totally new-to-me grief process. I’ve been wrestling with the heaviness of grief, and I thank you for giving us permission to be vulnerable and to embrace hope too throughout this journey. I especially found episode 60 to be helpful. Thank you for what you do, it matters ❤️❤️❤️

    Excellent
This podcast has been comforting for me as I lost my beloved Dad unexpectedly 3 months ago. I searched for anything to help ease the all encompassing pain, and this helped because Brooke has been through it too. You don’t know grief until you’ve been through it and all of these interviews are like a balm for a broken heart. Thank you, Brooke

Highly recommended by a grief therapist
Brooke does a beautiful job with this very helpful, affirming podcast for anyone experiencing loss. I am a therapist whose practice is entirely devoted to grief and loss, and I am so grateful to have this resource to share with my clients as another source of support. I have only listened to three episodes so far, but they have been so spot on and address so many questions and emotions that my clients regularly bring up in session. Thank you for creating this podcast to help us humans to become more grief literate and more self-compassionate in facing the changes that loss brings to each of us. Brooke, thank you for being brave and creating this podcast as you grieve and remember your dear dad.

    Thank you
I just found your podcast so started at the beginning and your first episode I kept saying yes yes omg! I’m 35 and lost my mom after 3 months from a cancer diagnosis. Still makes no sense. It’s great to hear someone who knows the pain as I’m not yet married nor have kids. However I met my now fiancé almost husband the weekend my mom fell ill and it’s been amazing and so hard at the same time. I don’t have my mom to help plan my wedding, go wedding dress shopping etc. it’s heartbreaking. I’m sorry for the pain you were put through and losing a parent is the worst thing and don’t wish it upon anyone. 💔 prayers to you 🙏

    Just what I needed
My dad died in December 2020 from cancer and often I have grabbed on to any and every resource I could to try to move through my grief as healthily as possible. What I’ve found though, is much of these resources have been so similar. Once you’ve read one book about grief, all the others start to feel the same, at least for me. Finding this podcast has been a true blessing though. I have an hour ride to work so this has been an incredible way to really think about my own experience, hear from others, and heal in a really unique way. Thank you for doing this. I needed it.

Learning how to grieve before death
I am grateful to have two parents who are still alive, but my dad began showing signs of dementia and other systemic health issues in 2019. I stumbled on The Grief Coach not long after that time and was really struggling to know what to do, not to do, how to act, etc. Through Brooke's podcasts, I am learning to embrace both life and death now; not when it’s convenient or relevant or imminent in any circumstance. Changing in this way has led to more tears, more difficult discussions, and more life decisions than I ever dreamed necessary. But it has allowed me to see life (again) and death (for the first time) in true color. Moments and memories are more vibrant. Relationships have more flavor and fervor. The Grief Coach podcast enabled and supported this change in me. Thank you Brooke!

    Great perspective on divorce
Love the episode on divorce with Juliana! What a refreshing way of looking at this complex issue. This is the voice of this generation!

    Insightful and Well Done
Ms. James does an excellent job allowing her guests to tell their story and their thoughts on an incredibly difficult concept to discuss. Her podcast offers those who need it a way to be more comfortable thinking, talking, and processing death, but perhaps the best part of the show is it helps all of us think about life differently, too. Keep it up!

A refreshing way to hear about divorce
This episode with Juliana about divorce is so good! I love hearing the way she talks about divorce being the impetus of her healing journey and how she said “coming home to herself.” Great episode!

    Brilliant
Brooke’s podcast is insightful and intelligent. Grief is a difficult thing to discuss, but she always does so with elegance. I also, truly appreciate how she discusses all types of grief, not just those that are commonly thought of. I appreciate this podcast for all it is

Never heard someone better on the topic of grief. Brooke knows exactly the threads to pull and how to pull them and when to call on others to help in doing so. Truly phenomenal podcast that has offered me such helpful perspective.

A comfortable place to be when in grief
I am listening to Brooke and her guests as I stitch together Hugz from Heaven pillows from the clothing of deceased loved ones. I certainly have come to the right place💕 Talking about death and dying has always been such a taboo topic yet happens to ALL of us - without exception. Brooke and her guests are doing such a great service by compassionately discussing all issues dealing with death... and the challenges faced by those who are grieving their loss.

    A wealth of knowledge!
For the last 10 years I’ve been designing funeral programs full time, and I thought I knew it all about grief. This podcast is so rich in knowledge, from every angle. I’m presently binge listening to every episode. I wish I had all this information when my daughter died of cancer. I’ll be recommending it to all I meet.

Everyone needs this podcast - esp if you haven’t experienced death
I’ve known Brooke for such a long time and watching her channel her own grief into a tool to help others understand their own was so touching, intimate and powerful. Grief is the awful, traumatic teacher we never want to interact with, but if we don’t interact with it we fall into a deeper pit and can’t use it as a catalyst. Everyone needs to listen to this.

    Gratitude
My sisters and I are filled with so much gratitude for Brooke and her guests sharing their hearts.

    Exceptional resource
This podcast provides not only practical and helpful tips and frameworks for dealing with loss, but dozens of beautiful and moving lenses through which we can examine our grief, sit with it. In speaking with doctors, spiritual leaders, authors, and people who’ve experienced all kinds of loss, Brooke with this podcast has built an exceptional resource. Even those who aren’t currently experiencing grief will find valuable information, to compassionately support a loved one, friend, colleague, or acquaintance who is.

    Thank You.
I lost my Mom to a 10 year battle with breast cancer. We lost the matriarch of our family 2 weeks before Christmas. 6 months prior, I lost my baby sister to heart disease and a stroke. I was searching foe a podcast that could potentially provide comfort and insight, when I stumbled upon this one. Thank you so much for sharing as everything I’ve experienced is mirrored. Your no nonsense but gentle way of expressing your sentiments makes this a great podcast for the grieving as well as those around them.

Take it from one who knows grief only too well….
The Grief Coach is one of the best resources I’ve found for grappling with the emotional and practical aspects of grief and loss. And I write this after burning through a LOT of grief resources since my husband died in an apparent freak accident five years ago. I first learned about the podcast when a friend was a guest on the September 16 episode Experiencing Loss Abroad. I then went back and listened to some of the earlier episodes, ranging from Talking About Wills Won’t Kill You, to Different Grief Experiences Between Sudden and Expected Death. The host Brooke James is very frank and authentic in telling her own personal story. When she interviews others about their grief and loss experiences, her skill as an empathetic interviewer elicits unvarnished recollections that other grievers need to hear to know we are not alone. When Brooke conducts more practical interviews like that with a trust and estates attorney, she is adept at focusing on the most important questions, and eliciting answers that are helpful for listeners with a broad range of experience levels. A wonderful resource for people experiencing all sorts of grief and loss — thank you!

    Empathetic Character, Actionable Insights
This podcast provides real resources and helps to break down the stigma in our society discussing loss. Our empathetic host, Brooke, guides us through stories, interviews, and commentary from experts to help us all learn a bit more about what it means to grieve. This podcast is a comforting resource giving me actionable advice as I support a partner grieving a devastating loss. Thank you Brooke.

    Importance of Grief
As a frequent listener of “The Grief Coach”, it is a necessary podcast for a topic that is not thought about on a regular basis. Very often, we as individuals don’t know what to do when we lose someone. Brooke’s podcast is able to dissect each aspect of grief and the many forms in which it manifests. If you have experienced loss or know someone who’s grieving, give it a listen.

Such important topics to discuss and explore
One of the great things about this podcast is that it lets people learn and think about really private and sensitive things that they might otherwise not have access to and to do it in a safe environment. These are difficult issues to confront and Brooke does such a wonderful job discussing and exploring them with the care and attention they deserve.

Brooke always manages to convey the right mix of advice, humor, empathy, and the hard facts of dealing with death and grief. Even if you haven’t experienced the tremendous loss she has, it’s a meaningful listen that makes you think.

    Wonderful show & resource!
I binged listened to 5 episodes back to back since it was so good and very related if you’ve lost someone close to you. Some episodes are heavier than others as I found myself crying while listen to a few (even on the train). Brooke does an excellent job with telling her story, providing great resources and providing comfort for people who are in similar situations. I found myself nodding my head at so much she said as it resonated with as my mother died 7 years ago as well as learning things I wasn’t aware of (thank you!). I love the realness and rawness of the podcast which comes across as very genuine. Great job and I can’t wait to hear more each week.

Equips you with tools to grieve with yourself and others
Mechanisms to cope with death have been imposed upon me and I’ve honestly never taken a moment to think about them until this podcast. This podcast has equipped me with tools to help myself and others heal from the death of a loved one - highly recommend it!

    Amazing podcast
I really appreciate the vulnerability that Brooke shows. I’m so impressed with how she talks about grief in such an honest way - its very relatable. Give Brooke a listen if you’re looking for an honest conversation about this
  • pilateshound
    So so relatable and comforting
Wow! I love this for too many reasons. For one, I am floored someone can relate to her audience and her guest speakers so eloquently and cheekily after having gone through a death like this within the past year. It’s inspiring!! We all can take away something deep and heartfelt from this, including those who have never experienced a death to someone close. It could - at least - shed a little perspective/preparation, NOT that we’re ever prepared for such heartbreak. I lost my Dad when I was 25 to a miserable drawn-out illness, alcoholism. I can’t believe how this podcast brought me to tears, made me laugh and comforted me all in the same hour, almost 8 years later and I can’t wait to follow along.
  • kegrayson
    Much needed podcast
I lost my father when I was a teenager, and I wish I’d had this podcast as a resource! Brooke speaks about her fathers death with rare and inspiring honesty and openness. I think it would provide comfort and community to anybody going through loss and grief — and helpful, practical information on death and estates for those planning ahead or who are curious about what to expect. A must listen!
  • MKJenks
We all need to hear this
Brooke has found a way to take a topic that we fear and make it a truly inspiring and safe space for her listeners. Her honesty and ability to relate to anyone handling grief makes this podcast a must listen!
