    ā€œThe Great Societyā€ 60 years on…
The Baby Boomers were just coming of age during the 1964-68 legislative sessions when LBJ’s ā€œGreat Societyā€ was being imagined and the Civil Rights Movement made sweeping changes to economic and social equality for minority, poor and older Americans (Voting Rights Act, Fair Housing and Food Stamp Acts, and the Social Security/Medicare Act). Now that generation has become by ā€˜old white men’ in congress who are letting it all be torn down. Why? Heather Cox Richardson has a gift for calmly reminding listeners of the historical context for currents events, and moving us to ask the question ā€œIs this what we voted for?ā€

    Breathe of Fresh Air
This show is helping keep me sane during these crazy times. Through enough to be well informed but short enough it’s doable everyday. I love that it is factual and drama free. She explains everything well, love the history through lines and think everyone would be a better citizen if we listened regularly.

    Everyone should listen!!
As our history is being erased, scrubbed from websites, banned from libraries, and brutalized by our own government this podcast and all of Heather Cox Richardson’s writings are the best investment of our time. So grateful for her steady, rational, informative voice.

    Incredibly valuable pod
This is the best daily 15 minutes in all of the news/politics/history podcast category because it provides outstanding historical context for current events while assisting listeners with higher level thinking of complex issues. Could not recommend more.

Superb historical context for current crises
This podcast is a godsend - the craziness of our current times don’t make any sense on the surface, but with this podcast she provides the broader context, thereby exposing the roots of the overtly dystopian actions of the current administration. Dr. Cox Richardson helps us understand how the government is actually intended to work, and why the current actions are counterproductive for all but the richest Americans. A problem well defined is half-solved.

    Outstanding Current Events Analysis
Dr Richardson provides the best analysis of current political events of anyone I have encountered. She presents legal and historical context that is absent in any other source.

Not what I was looking for
Searching for an unbiased news outlet. She’s a good writer, but I felt there was too much opinion interjected.

    Healing and informative
HCR is heaven sent, she’s here when she is most needed. Letters to Americans, as a podcast, is going to make it go to more hands. We are fortunate to have great American Historians, but HCR is the best. Make Letters to an American by HCR, a family ritual, make it an ice-breaker at get -togethers with friends, or make a carpool listening habit. The infirnation given by HCR will be ever revered, it is her gift to her country.

    A National Freaking Treasure
Letters from an American is written and narrated by a brilliant historian. She has three times more knowledge of American history in her little finger than most of us do in our whole body. I’m so grateful for her calm, rational explanations about current events, and her relevant historical comparisons to add context. It’s clear she has a deep appreciation of history and a wealth of knowledge. She is consistently generous in sharing that knowledge with others, and I’m so thankful that we have people like her right now. I’m not kidding when I say she’s a National Freaking Treasure. Thank you, HCR! šŸ’œ

    An essential listen
This pod (or newsletter if you subscribe to email or FB version) is essential for distilling the nonstop chaos with historical context and solid references. I must read for all American.

    Thankful
I'm incredibly thankful for Heather Cox Richardson. For teaching us our real American history and telling the true news, using facts and data. One of my new favorite podcasts.

    Smart, Succinct + On Point
In yet another chaotic, vindictive, of course grifting, and just plain mean Trump Presidency, Heather Cox Richardson’s clear analysis of the rank under-belly of this Administration brings it all to light — however hideous. A vengeful man-child is, once again, working out his pain on us.
  • bobkobberfig
    Excellent!
I’ve been reading and now listening to Heather’s letters for years. It’s facts with important historical context. Our country would be so much better off if everyone consumed her content instead of the propaganda and false information too many people believe.
  • Border Chic
    A must every day!
She unpacks the crazy news and gives historical perspective. At the moment regarding the stupidity of those who don’t study it!
  • BradBromling
    Wow
This is an indispensable guide to what is happening in the US. It is orange juice for the political soul and I don’t get through the day without it! I have no idea how she is able to pull this off everyday, but I hope she never stops! Great history, great analysis and great commentary. Only 1 minor complaint: I’m not a fan of the banjo (?) music at the beginning.
  • Dork Queen
History is the best lens for current events
I love this pod! Understanding history does not make the things happening today any less awful, but it does make it fascinating
  • heylookanewreview
Love the show, soften the intro
These episodes are like poetry a lot of the time with a mic drop at the end. Thank you for your time and work. The twangy music in the beginning sounds like nails on a chalkboard when I’m not expecting it (i.e. autoplay). Maybe put more of a fade in? The composition itself is nice but it’s just such an abrupt intro.
