The Baby Boomers were just coming of age during the 1964-68 legislative sessions when LBJ’s “Great Society” was being imagined and the Civil Rights Movement made sweeping changes to economic and social equality for minority, poor and older Americans (Voting Rights Act, Fair Housing and Food Stamp Acts, and the Social Security/Medicare Act). Now that generation has become by ‘old white men’ in congress who are letting it all be torn down. Why? Heather Cox Richardson has a gift for calmly reminding listeners of the historical context for currents events, and moving us to ask the question “Is this what we voted for?”

I love hearing the letter read everyday and am so grateful to Heather Cox Richardson for writing it.

This podcast is a godsend - the craziness of our current times don’t make any sense on the surface, but with this podcast she provides the broader context, thereby exposing the roots of the overtly dystopian actions of the current administration. Dr. Cox Richardson helps us understand how the government is actually intended to work, and why the current actions are counterproductive for all but the richest Americans. A problem well defined is half-solved.

Letters from an American is written and narrated by a brilliant historian. She has three times more knowledge of American history in her little finger than most of us do in our whole body. I’m so grateful for her calm, rational explanations about current events, and her relevant historical comparisons to add context. It’s clear she has a deep appreciation of history and a wealth of knowledge. She is consistently generous in sharing that knowledge with others, and I’m so thankful that we have people like her right now. I’m not kidding when I say she’s a National Freaking Treasure. In yet another chaotic, vindictive, of course grifting, and just plain mean Trump Presidency, Heather Cox Richardson’s clear analysis of the rank under-belly of this Administration brings it all to light — however hideous. A vengeful man-child is, once again, working out his pain on us.

I’ve been reading and now listening to Heather’s letters for years. It’s facts with important historical context. Our country would be so much better off if everyone consumed her content instead of the propaganda and false information too many people believe.

She unpacks the crazy news and gives historical perspective. At the moment regarding the stupidity of those who don’t study it!

This is an indispensable guide to what is happening in the US. It is orange juice for the political soul and I don’t get through the day without it! I have no idea how she is able to pull this off everyday, but I hope she never stops! Great history, great analysis and great commentary. Only 1 minor complaint: I’m not a fan of the banjo (?) music at the beginning.

I love this pod! Understanding history does not make the things happening today any less awful, but it does make it fascinating

These episodes are like poetry a lot of the time with a mic drop at the end. Thank you for your time and work. The twangy music in the beginning sounds like nails on a chalkboard when I’m not expecting it (i.e. autoplay). Maybe put more of a fade in? The composition itself is nice but it’s just such an abrupt intro.

Thank you for your historic based factual approach to helping us navigate through this difficult time in our country. I appreciate your non-reactive manner and your avoidance of sensationalism. It’s important to have grounded and factual information sources.
